Production Stills | Examinations/Observations
This section will contain observations from examining stills and interviews.
From the Weta Workshop website
According to the Weta Workshop website "Greg Broadmores illustration of an Angel concept, playing with the idea of an EVA becoming a twisted version of its former self." This of course suggests this is a sketch of the 13th Angel when it takes over Unit 03.
Something that's comforting is also found on the website. The name of Misato is found instead of "Susan" and Rei is spelled as it should be instead of "Ray" and Asuka is also "Asuka."
From the ADV DVDs
First of all, from the interview with Weta Workshop on the Director's Cut DVD one of them specifically says they would like the chance to work on the effects (since at this point they've only been hired to do designs) of the FILMS. Yes, plural. This could have been a mistake, or it could mean that ADV is perhaps planning a franchise, there's no way of knowing at this point of course and it's probably examining it too closely, but you never know.
It seems likely that Weta will be hired to do the actual effects, mostly because who better to do the effects than those who designed them? I hope they do, because then it will be visually stunning at least, so it'd still look nice if they mess up the plot. They want it to be a real world and not some fantastic impossible place, which is a good sign.
They wanted to put a new spin on it and the original director of the series Hideki Anno said that they had a new way of looking at the world and told them not to be bound by the constrictions of the world in the anime.
Wings. According to this still the Evas will have wings. Now, this may or may not happen, at this phase it's more of an outpouring of ideas and options for ADV to choose from and move forward with in the actual film. They're designing a whole world, with no script even made (that we know of) they could have wings and never even use them. At this point there's a lot open.
This design concept of Ramiel (the 5th Angel) was the first design of an Angel to be released thus far. It is fairly close to the original, keeping the basic geometrics, but also has its own distinctness from the show. In my opinion it gets good marks.
The Evas have the same general design, which is good. It's the same silhouette as Weta said in the DVD interview with some minor detail changes. Evas with toes? I'm not so sure about that part, the boots just seemed to make more sense to me.

(The names appear correctly on the Weta website, so it may just be like movies shooting under a different name or something and may have no reflection on the movie whatsoever. Hopefully, this means no worries.) I don't understand why the plug suits have holes in the hand parts. Of course, like I said, this is still in the design phase and nothing is certain.
I like the idea of the rifle racks and other things moving around on carts underground. They probably do, but you don't really see it in the series and on the surface they're shot up to specific weapon locations/depots. They also said in an interview that they thought up a vehicle solely to pick up spent shell casings. Weta is showing that they're making the world as believable as possible.
An interesting change from the series, the "new city" (assumed to be Tokyo-3) is built on top of the ruins of the devastated city (assumed to be Tokyo destroyed in Second Impact). The ruins above the water are also utilized and people live in them in these designs.
The standard NERV slogan and symbol seem to be gone, replaced by a plain white "NERV" or a white "N" on helmets. This makes sense as it'd be easier to mass produce things with a simple concept design and would be easier to paint on larger objects (walls, doors, etc.) as well.
