Berserk
Directed by: Naohito Takahashi
In the first episode someone who calls himself "The Black Swordsman" battles an evil tyrant king. He carries a giant sword, and has a repeating crossbow on his mechanical hand. The following episodes take place before the first, where "The Black Swordsman" is a mercenary (with both hands) with an oversized sword who is called Guts. He joins with a band of mercenaries called "The Band of The Hawk" led by Griffith. There is a war between two opposing sides that has raged for one hundred years. "The Band of The Hawk" fights on the side of Midland. As Griffith gains prestige nobles in the King's court get jealous as plots form, while Griffith tries to realize his dream.
The DVD features contain the first five episodes, production sketches, and an image gallery. It has an outtakes feature that shows several instances where the dubbing actors messed up or were goofing off. It also contains some trailers. The second DVD contains four episodes and all that the first had feature-wise plus a textless opening. Also in the Extras section on main if you move left (to the left torch) there is a drawing of Zodd who says, "I'm looking for warriors (Zodd says this in the Dreamcast game when you fight him as well)." The third DVD contains four episodes, production sketches, outtakes, the original TV opening, a textless closing, and a storyboard, where the images are shown the sound is played and goes through the entire 13th episode. The fourth DVD contains the next four episodes, production sketches, outtakes, trailers, and an audio only interview with series creator Kentaro Miura. The fifth DVD has four episodes, outtakes, trailers, and an interview with Producer Toshio Nakatani. Also, in the extras section click on the left torch for some pictures of a plush Zodd toy around the Media Blasters studio. There is an additional "sampler" DVD with the fifth volume, which contains one complete episode of the Space Pirate Mito, Cosmo Warrior, Genma Wars, Babel II, and Miku series. The sixth and final DVD has the last four episodes, another series sampler DVD of the same episodes, outtakes, TV opening encore version, a TV spot, and berserk forces music video. There is also paint it berserk, which shows people painting pictures of Berserk characters on walls in promotion of the series. In the extras menu on both torches there are some graphics possibly from promoting the Berserk game.
Final Verdict: Berserk is a very excellent series and definitely worth checking out. Although you don't understand some things at first they are revealed later. There are battles, backroom plots, some funny parts, and supernatural occurrences. It has lots of action, some nudity and is rather violent. There is excellent characterization and the series ends incomplete, as the manga is still being made. On the fifth volume the producer says he hopes to make more Berserk episodes, and here's hoping. Although it just ends suddenly, Berserk is one of the best series I've ever seen and worth it.
