Death and Rebirth DVD review

This is a review of the Death and Rebirth DVD released by Manga.

Evangelion: Death and Rebirth

Brief: Death: The television series of Evangelion is briefly relived as it goes through clips from the series plus some addition and improved animation. It goes through different sections each focusing on a character, which smoothly changes into another character. It is not a way to get acquainted with the series but merely enhances it.

Brief: Rebirth: All the Angels have been destroyed but NERV is on first stage alert. SEELE wants to use Unit 1 to initiate their plans, but Gendou refuses. SEELE forces attack NERV and Misato rescues Shinji from the soldiers ordered to terminate all NERV personnel on sight. In Unit 2 Asuka reconnects with her mother and destroys SEELE's air and ground forces. The Eva Series descends on wings and circles above Unit 2, whose umbilical cable has been cut. Features: The double-sided discs features are pretty good. There is a Manga DVD catalogue and Manga previews. There are a total of seven trailers. One of them is in English and the others are in Japanese. The Mokuji interactive feature lets you select terms and profiles relating to the scene while the movie is playing (dubbed only). The MAGI Archives are all the files of the Mokuji able to be accessed in the menu. There is a photo gallery and a commentary track. The commentators are Amanda Winn Lee (English language director and voice of Rei), Jason C. Lee (co-producer), and Taliesin Jaffe (anime enthusiast). As they themselves put it Taliesin will be serious, Jason will be superficial, and Amanda will be bubbly in the commentary. The commentary track is also played on the dubbed. Of course the Japanese and regular dubbed is on the other side of the disc. The menu is interesting with many things happening as it loops.

Final Verdict: Needless to say I liked the movie, so see it. The menu is definitely among the best out there and is great to just watch the loop. Fans of the dub will be rather upset. Several voice actors are different including those for Fuyutsuki, Maya, and Hyuga. The others while maybe the same sometimes sound off because the series was dubbed in 1999 and it'd be hard to go back and get exactly the same voice. Also, all of the clips that form Death was redubbed, and some parts have different emotion or conviction so you think it should sound one way but doesn't. The commentary is fairly good. Some parts are funny and Taliesin talks about interesting references to mythology and symbolism. The commentary on Rebirth is probably the beginning commentary for the End of Eva movie because it just ends at the credit sequence. Despite a review saying that Manga made Rebirth just the beginning of End of Eva is proven wrong with the release of End of Evangelion, there is at least one change in music. Fans of sub will likely be a little upset because the Mokuji features and commentary are for dubbed only. Despite this in case you forgot it is great, now go buy it.
