Lost Universe Volumes 1-4

Directed by: Shinichi Watanabe

The first DVD of this series contains 4 episodes. The basic storyline follows the journeys of Kain Bluesummer who is a Trouble Contractor. In this futuristic world of space ships and an international police force a Trouble Contractor is like a tame form of bounty hunter doing random jobs such as escorting or recovering stolen items. Kain's ship Swordbreaker has a female avatar (she basically is the ship's AI personality in human shape) named Canal. On their jobs they meet Millie who practically forces herself into being part of the crew, after all she is the "best in the universe." Together they go about doing jobs and constantly arguing. The Universal Guardians are unable to stop the large crime empire of Nightmare, as Kain and the Swordbreaker catch their attention.

The DVD came out a while ago and as is normal with older DVDs the features are slim. All it has is previews. The second DVD contains the next four episodes and once again only previews. The third DVD contains four episodes and some previews. The fourth DVD is the same with four episodes and some trailers.

Final Verdict: Lost Universe is not bad. It is rather Star Wars-esque with credits as currency, a large space station looking eerily like the Death Star, and a 'psi-blade.' I don't really think I hold it against it. It is sometimes amusing and other times serious. Volume 4 is the last volume of the six I can find to rent so I don't know if or when I'll be able to finish the series.
