Noir Volumes 1-2
Directed by: Kouichi Mashimo
Kirika Yumura is a young woman who knows nothing of her past. She doesn't know why but she is trained in firearms and hand-to-hand combat. All she had in her room was an identification card, a gun, and a pocket watch that plays music. She meets with an assassin named Mireille Bouquet. The pocket watch has significance for her as it appeared after a tragic event when she was young. They team up and use the codename noir for their assassin identification. They are hired to take out various targets while someone is also after them.
The first DVD has five episodes, production sketches, a clean opening, a clean closing, original Japanese promos and previews. The second DVD has four episodes, production sketches, a clean opening and closing, original Japanese promos and previews.
Final Verdict: Noir is a decent series so far but there were some problems in my mind. First, I got really tired of all the flashbacks that they showed over and over, only occasionally revealing something new. The muddled pasts of the characters are good for the storyline but the fact that they are assassins doesn't really make for much sympathy to their turmoil. Most of their targets are corrupt and evil people, probably to make the audience feel better. Their enemy is made out to be 'them' and 'they' until they are identified with a name later. There is some nice use of color in places giving it a unique look. There are some good action scenes throughout the episodes as they encounter danger and go on missions.
