Voices of a Distant Star
Directed by: Makoto Shinkai
After an alien force attacks the human race, a young woman named Mikako joins the UN force to battle with this new enemy. However, she leaves behind her love, Noboru. They can only communicate through cell phone messages that must travel for years before they arrive. As Mikako goes deeper into space she doesn't age, while Noboru grows up and continues waiting for messages.
The DVD features three versions of the award-winning animated short "She and Her Cat," an interview with Makoto Shinkai, "Voices of a Distant Star" Director's Cut with alternate vocals, original production animatics, four original Japanese trailers, a reversible cover, and previews.
Final Verdict: Voices of a Distant Star is well done given the half hour it takes up. It has some nice scenes but it just isn't able to play out as well as it could in the given time and seems left undone. With some action thrown in, the feature is mostly about the separation of the two in love. The disc has a good amount of special features to go along with the feature itself. The story also doesn't explain a lot, probably because of the short time allotted. Also, the text messages aren't translated; so only through the characters can the viewer learn what they said. In the end, it seems to be more of a starting point to a larger story than just a self-contained one.
