And the 101st reason why Nephrite rules is..... (timpani roll)
101. He is just all around superior, powerful, godlike, intelligent, buttkicking, wreaking of awesomeness (to steal a line from
Edge...), and everything else rolled into one!
This has been Obsidian, proud founder

There’s a chance you’re wondering: “Why Nephrite? What makes him so good? He’s only been in the entire series for 11 episodes!? Yes, he is a short-lived character, but he’s easily my favorite. There are a bunch of things that I like about him and things he’s done that make him my favorite, more than the Sailors themselves. Here’s a little essay on the true character that is Nephrite - what he’s done, how he was unique, and his personality, etc.
First of all, let’s take a look at his characteristics. He’s the third most powerful living thing in the Negaverse next to Beryl/Negaforce and Malachite. His uniform seems to define the business like person he is, as well. The gold trim on his uniform, and the red epaulettes on his shoulders make him look dignified and strong. The hair also compliments him very well. His long brown hair doesn’t make him look gay or like a 1980’s Rock Star. It’s that hair that looks very mature and dignified, almost like one of the wigs people like Mozart, Washington, and Jefferson wore. Nephrite’s hair is his most striking feature when you see him. It makes him stand out in a crowd. His eyes were also one of his stronger points. One thing that defines a character is the pair of eyes that he or she has. The eyes of a character really fit their personality, imo. For example, Sage’s cold eyes (from “Ronin Warriors? define the cold, strong character that he is. Nephrite has these cold blue eyes that make him look strong; they’re so cold, they’re almost freaky. His eyes glow red when he first appears, and when he finds his target.
Nephrite’s powers are easily some of the strongest in the series. He has the ability to control the stars and galaxies and the power they hold. It’s an Oriental belief that the stars are the rulers of the universe and its creatures. Nephrite’s character takes true to this belief, and it gives him a wide variety of attacks and powers. He has a meteor shower attack (seen in “Molly’s Folly? in which he sends about 20 or so bolts of energy (they look like a flaming tennis ball falling from the sky, only they’re blue) raining down on his opponent. They’re powerful enough to make a large hole in concrete. Another of his attacks is a large laser he shoots from his right hand (as seen in “A Friend in Wolf’s Clothing? that sends Sailor Moon back about 30 feet. That’s a lot of force, if you ask me. Also from “Molly’s Folly?was his plasma attack, which also sent Moon careening. He fired a large ball of pure energy from his right hand that traveled in a loop the way Mars?fire (from the first season) would. He also has the ability to form a crystal sword in his hand, and he knows full well how to use it. The fact that he managed to stab the wall so close to that youma’s head (“A Friend in Wolf’s Clothing? shows he can use the sword with precision. His strongest attack, however, is his solar system attack. He crosses his arms and a solar system with two planets forms (from “Molly’s Folly?. He sends this flying at his opponent, and it has enough force to rip up the sidewalk of a city block! Moon had to kick herself back about 40 feet to avoid the range of this attack!
When you think about it, the Generals were some of the strongest enemies Moon has ever faced. One thing I like about SM is that the enemies don’t necessarily become more and more powerful as new seasons come about. I mean, when you look at the General’s abilities to fly, teleport, possess machinery (Jed, Nephrite, and Mal did this) you see how wide their range of abilities is. Overall, the only enemies that were more powerful than the Generals: Wiseman, Mistress 9, Zirconia may be able to take out Jed and Zoi, but I don’t think he’d take out Nephrite and Mal, and Pharaoh 90. All the other enemies had their traits, but their attacks and abilities were limited compared to the Generals. Nephrite and Malachite are probably stronger than Uranus and Neptune when you compare abilities, attacks, speed, and strength. Zoi and Jed may even stand a chance against them. Don’t discount the Generals just because they came earlier in the series. They’re some of the strongest enemies the Sailors have faced. It took the pure power of the Silver Crystal to bring down Mal; he brought them all down himself! Nephrite likely could have done the same. Zoi may actually be able to, considering her cleverness and speed. Jed was beaten, though (sorry, Jed fans). However, the Generals, if they use their full power, would probably be able to defeat the four inners. The Silver Crystal may kill them, but I think they (Mal and Nephrite) could survive the Spiral Heart scepter (considering it wasn’t as strong as the Sliver Crystal b/c it was Darien and Serena’s love). Nothin?beats the Silver Crystal (except Wiseman. It took two of them to beat him) J
Back to Neffy. Some people have accused him of being incompetent. However, when you really think about it, Nephrite was a genius. His plan was much less conspicuous than Jedite’s, and he knew how to work it. Jedite attempted to collect energy by gathering people into groups and then taking it all at once. That’s a lot of energy, and all those people can easily be noticed and soon someone would stop him (come on, anyone would eventually notice that buses were flying through the air? Jedite also used the same surname - Jed - on all of his missions. Let’s see, there was Jed the radio talk show host, Jed the temple worker, Jed the athletic trainer, Jed the sea captain?Nephrite, however, had an excellent plan. Basically, instead of making himself look like an enemy by putting himself out into the open, he took on another personality as Maxfield Stanton, a young businessman who has an interest in arts and tennis. He drove around in a Ferrari Testarossa and frequently made himself seen at public events. This was his way of blending in with society so it’d be very difficult for anyone to pick him out. When he went out on his missions, he took on sort of a patron of the arts type of personality. He managed to get energy levels raised to high points by tapping into the stars?power to find a person who was going to use a lot of energy. Nephrite would then take the energy when the amount being given off climaxed. Nephrite’s plan could have gotten more energy from one person than Jed’s plan could have gotten from a huge crowd. Nephrite’s plan almost worked, but there were a couple of bad coincidences he didn’t intend on encountering:
So, he ran into some problems! However, he did manage to collect Molly’s energy from point #6. People always say that Zoisite was really cool because of the crystal. However, if it wasn’t for the energy Nephrite gathered from Molly, Beryl wouldn’t have been able to create that Dark Crystal in the first place!! Zoi has Nephrite to thank for that!
Nephrite also has a certain style about him that makes him quite unique. In addition to owning a Ferrari Testarossa (which is about $200,000, I might add), he lives in an ominous gothic mansion in a massive forest. This is really his Negaverse mansion that he transported to Earth to remain outside of Tokyo so he could effectively blend in. Nephrite also had some of the best power sequences I’ve ever seen. In his episodes, there were numerous occasions when the mansion would get dark on the inside and a massive galaxy with orbiting planets would appear. In these sequences, the center of the galaxy became a large planet - the main power source of the stars Nephrite was in syncopation with. This planet also appeared right over a large circular window in his mansion from the angle you see it at. There would be numerous occasions where stars, planets, and galaxies would fly by him. He tapped into this power and located his victim to steal energy from. When the stars found the victim, a massive laser shot from the center planet into Nephrite’s head. His eyes would glow bright crimson and his victim would appear. Who can say they get shot in the head with a laser every episode and come out unscathed? Certainly not Zoisite!!
Another awesome demonstration of his power comes about when he creates his own crystal. And you thought the Negaforce was powerful?Nephrite’s powers are so great that he has the ability to tap into his star power and create a crystal to hone in on a massive energy source - namely, the Silver Crystal. The sequence in which he creates it has to be one of the coolest scenes in SM. He guides his mind through the stars and galaxies - all the way up to the Milky Way - and channels his powers into a massive burst of purple lightning. After the lightning flashes, it dissipates and forms into a small black crystal: The Star Crystal. Come on, the guy is so special he actually gets his own crystal!
Another thing about Nephrite that really defines him is the group of youma he trains. Some of the youma he trained, had some very unique attacks and their own abilities that nearly took out everyone. The youma of his that really stand out come down to two: Gemini Twins and Leo the Lion. The Gemini twins were awesome because Nephrite trained them to use the power of the planets Mars and Mercury. This meant they were able to counter Sailor Mars and Sailor Mercury, making them powerful foes. They nearly killed all three scouts on their own with their abilities. Though their own desire for glory led to their demise, that was their sibling rivalry problem, not Nephrite’s. He trained them to use incredible power, and also came up with an idea no one else came up with: there are THREE Sailors! Why not use a larger number of youma to counterattack them?!? It makes perfect sense, right? Every other main enemy used one youma, but Nephrite was the only guy to send two at once! Nephrite’s other youma, Leo the Lion, holds the prestigious record of being the only youma in the show to still be alive. Yes, Leo is still alive. Basically, he is what he sounds like. Nephrite used his powers to call forth the spirit of the constellation Leo the Lion and sent it hurdling toward Moon and Tux. Leo may have been a lion, but he proved to be quite tough. Leo was probably the toughest Negaverse youma, possibly rivaling a daimon heart pod. It managed to survive Moon’s tiara attack; heck, he was completely unscathed! Leo got right back up and charged toward Tux and Moon! Leo’s spirit still lies in the stars; Nephrite recalled his spirit when he trapped Moon. Besides, he’s blue! That has to count for something, right??
Nephrite also holds the prestigious title as the only Negaverse villain to figure out Moon’s true identity and her name. Only Fish Eye found those two traits out, and only Jedite and Eugeal found out what she looked like out of her suit. Nephrite, however, managed to figure this out in a most unique way; he did it himself! There were no real coincidences involved; he figured it out on his own. He saw how Moon reacted when Molly was at the battle in “Molly’s Folly? The fact that Serena knew Molly’s name really said something to Nephrite: Moon must know Molly somehow. He managed to figure out that Molly really knew Sailor Moon, but Molly didn’t know it. He managed to find out that Molly had a friend named Serena, so he had a lead going for him. He managed to trick Moon into transforming by making it appear that he was attacking her. Hence, Nephrite managed to watch as Moon transformed, figuring out it was really Serena!!
People accuse Nephrite of being drunk b/c they saw him drinking that one time?Nephrite was drinking some kind of alcoholic beverage (referred to as “lemonade?by Zoisite). So? Who cares if he has a little to drink? He only had one drink in one episode! If you want drunk, you turn to the Amazon Trio! They were at a bar in every episode, even when they weren’t in the Dead Moon Circus! They were even at a bar on the beach! Those three have a ton of drinking problems. Considering the way they drank - i.e., one massive gulp per glass - they have problems! Nephrite was dignified in the way he drank. He sipped the drink, enjoying its flavor. You don’t see him guzzling Martinis or something, do you? No one accuses Prince Diamond of being drunk, and he had a glass of wine every episode! There’s no way Nephrite is a drinker.
A couple of misc things Nephrite did before I get to his big quality. First, he saved a photographer’s life. Guess that counts for something, huh? He also managed to beat a great tennis player on his first try! He beat the hell out of Moon with some of his attacks, injured a princess and got away with it, destroyed an elevator and got away with it, and ripped up a few sidewalks. He left his mark, to say the least!!
Finally, to end this huge article, I’ll conclude it with what makes Nephrite the greatest villain in the series, not to mention an awesome character and my personal favorite. The thing about him that you have to like is the fact that he was willing to change, and the fact that he did change. He was changing before he even knew it. It shows that it’s possible for someone to change, and that it’s possible to become good because of a person’s love. His relationship with Molly - one that grew over the course of his appearance on the show - helped make him a great character that changed for the better and eventually went out with a purpose. Let’s take a look, shall we?
Nephrite started out as a total madman with pure arrogance. He was cold hearted and unfeeling toward everyone. He didn’t care about anyone but himself - basically, he was your typical bad guy. He was obsessed with getting energy at any price, no matter how many people had to die because of it. But, when he encountered Molly, something began to change?
Nephrite first really ran into Molly at the doll exhibition. She had seen him before, and it was basically love at first sight for her. Nephrite didn’t really notice her there, but he found Molly at the exhibition. Molly was, of course, embarrassed beyond belief, but Nephrite seemed to act indifferent to her at first. Nephrite sort of ignored her, but then something happened?Nephrite put his plan into action to catch Moon off guard by posing as Tuxedo Mask. He sent out a love letter to every girl in the school from “Tuxedo Mask? and he knew that Moon would show up early. However, he ran into Molly before the big night, and Molly showed up early, even before Serena! Molly suspected it was Nephrite who sent the letters out, so she went to see him. Nephrite, disguised as Tuxedo Mask, encountered her and felt a strong energy in her. He sensed this powerful energy could only be possessed by Sailor Moon, so he mistook Molly for Moon and captured her energy. He was impressed with the love energy Molly had; it was as strong as the energy of the Silver Crystal (I’ll explain this in a bit)! If that doesn’t say that Molly loved him, what would?? However, this is when Nephrite really began to change. He saw Molly loved him, and it somewhat sparked something inside of him. Nephrite erased her memory because he realized she couldn’t know he was a Negaverse warrior, but he seemed to have an ulterior motive - he seemed to want to erase her memory in part so she wouldn’t have to feel the pain he put her through. This was the beginning of something new for Nephrite.
Nephrite next ran into Molly at the party in “Worth a Princess?Ransom? He showed up and danced with her, seeing if he could use her to get closer to the princess. However, it’s sort of ironic he even went to her, and then danced with her! The fact that he uses her instead of someone else seems to suggest an ulterior motive going on there. As a result, though, Molly falls in love with him further than before. Nephrite believed he was really using her, but the fact that he went to her in this episode seems to suggest that he’s really got some kind of feeling for her.
“Molly’s Folly?really brought out Nephrite’s true colors, even though he didn’t want to believe them. In this episode, he creates the powerful Star Crystal to find out who can lead him to the Silver Crystal. The Star Crystal was also designed to hone in on a strong energy source and detect it - basically, the Silver Crystal. He was astonished by the appearance of Molly when he tried to figure out where the Silver Crystal was. Nephrite then arranges a meeting with Molly, knowing that she likes him. He talked about the Silver Crystal, and Molly recalled a crystal her mother had. She believed that was it, and she offered to get it for him. Molly steals the crystal and runs to Nephrite. He uses his Star Crystal to try to detect some strong energy source from it. He receives no signal from it, for it’s nothing but a worthless gem. However, then something strange happens: The Star Crystal reacts to Molly?he sees that it’s reacting to her love energy - her love for him is as strong as the Silver Crystal. He battles Sailor Moon, and notices Molly is still there. Moon throws the tiara at him, but Molly steps in front. The thing about this was: Nephrite showed concern for Molly. Think about it: if this were his original self from the beginning of the series, he’d have let her take the blow and continue to battle! He may have even pushed Molly right into it! However, the fact that he actually showed some concern for her proved that his love for her was growing. It somewhat climaxed when Yasha attacked. Malachite’s youma, Yasha, was sent to spy on Nephrite to see if he would get the Silver Crystal. Yasha attacks Nephrite, and he’s caught off guard. Nephrite successfully defends himself, but drops the Star Crystal. Molly goes to pick it up, and Yasha throws herself at Molly. Nephrite then fires an energy ball at Yasha and saves Molly’s life. Nephrite couldn’t explain it himself; his own emotions got the better of him and he didn’t even know why he saved her. Nephrite tried his best to rationalize it, but he really knew full well that he had feelings for her. He just didn’t know why.
Nephrite was worried at this point in “A Friend in Wolf’s Clothing? He was still wondering why he saved Molly, and why the Star Crystal reacted the way it did. He was having strange feelings - feelings he never had before. He was going soft, but he sort of dismissed it. So, he decided to put his plan into action and find Sailor Moon. As mentioned before, he found out Moon’s true identity. In addition, there was one scene where he went to Molly and tried to find out more about the Silver Crystal. He said he felt different, and how he was moved by Molly’s love. He talked about how Molly changed him. Though he didn’t think he meant it at this point, he really did. He really was moved, and this is proved later in the episode.
Nephrite found out Moon’s identity, and attacked her. However, Zoisite knew she could get rid of Nephrite if she took Molly. Zoi spied on him and saw where Molly lived, and once he left, three youma captured Molly. When Nephrite was about to take on Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon, he heard Molly scream from afar. Now, think about this. He realized that Moon and Tux were right there. He proved he could take them on and win (“Who is that Masked Man??, and he could have eliminated two of his enemies in one swift swoop. However, he chose to go save Molly, even though he really didn’t need her anymore. The fact that he did this - instead of killing Moon and Tux - showed he really did switch sides and that Molly’s love truly did change him.
Nephrite went to an abandoned nightclub where the three youma held Molly. Nephrite appeared and displayed one of the coolest fight sequences in the series. The three youma had unique powers. One had psychic abilities to throw an opponent off, another shot grenades, and the other had a vine for an arm that she shot at opponents. One youma attacked with the grenades, and the other threw him of with the psychic powers. However, he was too strong for them (their attacks barely phased him) and he took one out with one punch and the other out with two. The third one shot the vine, but he charged in with blinding speed right past it. He formed a crystal sword in his right hand and drove straight in. The youma backed up against the wall, scared as hell, and Nephrite rammed the sword right next to her throat! Then, the famous cold line: “I’m not letting you have my Star Crystal!! YOU tell Zoisite that for me!!!? Just like that, he saved Molly’s life instead of taking out Moon and Tux.
Nephrite took Molly away from the nightclub, probably planning to take her home. However, Molly noticed a wound on his arm (probably a gash from the plant armed youma). She took him into the park to tend to it. Nephrite sat down beside her and she ripped her pajamas to cover the wound. Molly then suggests they go for chocolate parfait. He decides to do it (didn’t expect that, did you?. Molly then asks him if there are any holidays in the Negaverse (though she doesn’t know it’s another universe; he just tells her it’s an organization). He then begins to laugh?Imagine that! A cold hearted villain like Nephrite laughing?Goes to show you how much a person can change! They begin laughing together, and Molly starts to cry at the fact that Nephrite’s changed so much?
Then, all hell breaks loose. The three sister youma show up again. The one with the plant arm shoots her arm toward them. Nephrite, in one of the noblest things ever done in the series, notices them, and then pushes Molly out of the way and dives in front of her!! He takes the brunt of the blow as the vines go right through his chest. Think about that. He dove in front of Molly and pushed her out of the way, taking the blow himself so she’d survive! In any case, the vines detach and remain in Nephrite’s upper chest. Molly desperately goes over to him in tears?Nephrite says Zoisite can have his Star Crystal, and tells Molly to run?Molly refuses, grabbing the vines and trying frantically to pull them out of his chest. She manages to succeed, pulling two of them and making them budge; she was actually pulling youma’s vines out of his chest! The other sister then fires grenades toward both of them. Nephrite gets up, grabs Molly, picks her up, and throws her down, covering her with his own body! After the explosions ensue, Molly notices Nephrite is bleeding all over (with green blood; he’s special, right??!!) His shirt is torn apart, and he asks her if she’s alright before collapsing from the pain?Zoisite appears and says the Negaverse doesn’t tolerate traitors as she coldly takes the loose Star Crystal off the ground. Nephrite begins to hunch over in pain and calls her a heartless creature (suits her, huh??) The sisters are about to finish him off right after Zoisite disappears, but Moon, Mercury, and Mars appear. They take out the sisters with their combined power.
However, Nephrite sits on the ground in pain as Molly cries beside him?He tells Moon that it seems as if her true identity will remain a secret? He then apologizes to Molly because they won’t be able to have a chocolate parfait? He says he’s sorry for lying about the parfait, but tells her he didn’t mean to. He holds her face and tells her not to forget him. He tells her he wants her to know she’s in his heart? His body begins to disappear and turn into stardust as Molly cries beside him. The bandage from Molly’s pajama’s falls to the ground as Nephrite disappears. The three Sailors stand beside her and cry as Molly hunches over on the ground as if she herself had been stabbed?Nephrite’s soul, now stardust, flies up into the air above Tokyo toward the stars, where it remains to this day?
:Shivers: I can’t help that. That was a chilling scene, to say the least. Even though I’ve seen that scene many, many times, it still sends a chill down my spine whenever I see it. But, think about it. He sacrificed his own life to save Molly. He saw the sisters before they attacked, and could have gotten away (as he did before). He could have taken them out if he wanted to, come to think of it. He proved he could do it. However, he proved he loved Molly when he sacrificed his own life.
When you put all of these things together, you see why Nephrite is a character to remember. He was a great character who beats out pretty much every other villain in terms of style, uniqueness, and role in the series. He wasn’t in the series for long, but at least we know his soul is still watching over Molly, smiling whenever she’s happy. There’s only one thing left to wonder: what would he do if he came back, Molly took to him again, and Melvin tried to defend her?? I’d hate to think of what might happen to Melvin?
A very cool friend, indeed! Want to give a few comments? Here ya go! email
Amazing!! Just amazing!!
This is Obsidian dressed as Maxfield Stanton...he's got the outfit down packed, ne? ^^
