Controversial Characters

Main page

When Naoko Takeuchi created Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, she spawned a variety of colorful characters that raised controversy. If you don't believe me, just look at the differences between the anime and the manga and even some of the translation mistakes in the manga. Naoko appears to be a very liberal author and artist by raising the issues of homosexually and crossdressing.

First up: Uranus and Neptune. The edited anime made them cousins, when in reality they are much more. These two never actually kiss each other, but they make references to being together and are often seen either holding hands or gazing into each others' eyes. Naoko herself did not state outright that these two were lesbians, but she did say in an interview with an Italian magazine that homosexual love between two women is possible, and that the friendship between the two was strong enough to become love.

Haruka especially shows some homosexual tendencies, especially in the manga when she kisses Usagi. Haruka is forward by nature, but according to Japanese custom, a kiss is a very intimate thing-more so than in the United States and elsewhere.

Second: The Sailor Starlights. Girls or guys, and does it matter? In the anime, they transform into girls but remain males. In the manga, they are obviously females disguised as males. In both, Seiya/Star Fighter has feelings for Usagi, and all 3 Starlights have obvious feelings for their princess, Kakyuu.

Number three is Jupiter/Makoto: Due to one anime episode where Mako-chan appears to have a crush on Haruka, some people have assumed that this makes her bisexual. I don't believe that, because in the manga, she simply says that she looks up to her. Also, in that anime episode, Sailor Uranus uses Jupiter for monster bait, and Mako-chan had no idea Haruka was Uranus. If she did, I don't think she'd like her as much.

Number 4: Rei and Minako. It's been argued that these two have a homosexual relationship, when in fact they are simply very good friends. Granted, in the manga Stars series, Rei did tell the Starlights that they (the senshi) didn't need men, but she may have meant that they didn't need men because they had their princess (Usagi) to protect. The point is, I don't think they're lesbians.
Number 5: Zoicite and Kunzite/Malachite. Zoicite was a female in the anime, when in fact she was a male in the manga. DIC gave the two a bit of a romance, but from what I read of the manga, they were not romantically involved. Some people argue that the two are gay in the manga, but I don't believe that.

Number 6: Fisheye. A girl in the anime, guy in the manga, both with a crush on Mamoru. This one is in fact gay in the manga, and a cross-dresser to boot. Actually, if you count him hitting on Ami to try and defeat her, you could argue that he's bisexual..hmmm...
