Bishi Bashi Special (released separately in Japan as Super Bishi Bashi and Hyper Bishi Bashi) - Sony Playstation - 1999 (World)
When Digitiser (UK TV magazine) reviewed Bishi Bashi Special, they said that it was utterly, utterly dreadful - but that at the same time, it was probably one of the best games they'd ever had the pleasure of playing. Having finally bought a copy of BBS, I can see exactly what they mean. BBS is a compilation of some of the most awful, brilliant mini-games ever devised. It's a party game - get hold of at least one friend and compete across over 80 incredibly stupid challenges, all of which involve frantic button bashing. Sometimes they'll make you laugh out loud...at other times you'll be groaning in dismay - 'surely they don't expect me to play this?'
Some examples are probably required:
Uncle Bean:
Feed your greedy Uncle as many beans as possible! Just press left, right or down to catch the beans as they fall. Hours of entertainment! There's no real explanation for the prehistoric setting. There's another Uncle game as well, but this is the best.
Touch Tone Mania:
Quickly dial up the telephone number displayed before your opponent does. Dial quickly and you'll get the girl...dial slow and you get her dad! More fun than it sounds.
Robo Docking:
Press buttons of the correct colour to make your Robo ships morph into one of many giant robots! Brings back memories of playing with Transformers, though I think this is more Power Rangers inspired than anything else.
Dance Stage:
It's a small-time Beatmania style game...press the arrows in time to the music! You get a nice little 'Move your body' song playing in the background. There's also a guitar game which is impossible - I don't understand why, but I'm literally hard pushed to score more than 10, while the computer will routinely get over a hundred. I must be playing the thing wrong.
Meat Catcher:
As the picture suggests, press the buttons at the correct rythmn to make your Body Builder pogo high enough to catch the meat. And yes, that is a Gradius Maoi hiding in the background...there are quite a few Konami cameos in Bishi Bashi Special if you look for them.
