Sha Gojyo is nicknamed "Red", "Scandalous Dandy", "Scandalous Rogue" and such, but most who watch the anime remember him as "Ero-Kappa" - or the perverted kappa as he's called by Son Goku. Goku also calls him a "cockroach kappa" as well, which is fitting on account of the two strands of hair that stick up like cockroach antennae on his head.^_^
Gojyo's attitude is that of a careless playboy. He is a chainsmoker who drinks and has frequent affairs with women. He's not a bad guy, but he seems to rub people the wrong way because of his wild behavior and common manners. As some would put it "he's a hick". He watches out for himself and seems to be a confirmed bachelor - but then, with Gojyo's way with women, who wouldn't be?
He spends time traveling with the Sanzo party and picking on little Goku. They seem to be equally matched as far as neither one can really get the upper hand in a fight. Of course Sanzo usually breaks them up, so no one knows who would win (unless Goku lost his limiter).
He gets along best with Hakkai, whose life he once saved some years back. Since then the two have been like brothers. Sanzo and Gojyo don't get along well, aside from the fact that they are both heavily into drinking and smoking.
Gojyo's life was changed when his brother kept his mother from killing him when he was a child. The scars on his left cheek were given to him by her. He has joined the Sanzo party to find his lost brother and to help in putting the demons of the world right again.
Gojyo's weapon is the shaku-jou - a long staff with a blade on each end connected by a chain. One blade is a crescent turned outward, the other a spade. It is good for long distance combat and the chain can reach amazingly far. However, Gojyo is better at and prefers close combat where his fists are more effective weapons.
An interesting fact about Gojyo that I think is very funny and ironic is that he's a kappa (water demon) who can't swim. This makes for some fun in the series, to the expense of poor Gojyo's pride.
