Many thousands of years after the events of Chaotic Century and Guardian Force, on Planet Zi, Zoid battles are the main form of entertainment, but are also a way to earn money and develop Zoid piloting skills. The Zoid Battle Committee, abbreviated ZBC, was established to monitor Zoid battles and to enforce rules. There are different classes to organize Zoid teams; Classes E, D, C, B, A, and S.

Zoid warriors usually form teams of three, but the numbers may vary. Some pilots prefer to work alone *coughVegacough*, and some, like Jack Sisco, like to only work for money, so they become mercenaries.

The ZBC uses white judges to enforce the rules on the battlefield, but the Backdraft Group, a sinister organization that prefers to battle without any rules, uses the dark judge. The Backdraft Group will do anything to win a battle, such as using a huge black mobile sphere to crash into and destroy Zoids and an electromagnetic field to block shots.

The anime Zoids Zero focuses on the Blitz Team and their battles to ascend to Class S. The Blitz Team consists of Bit Cloud and his Liger Zero, Leena Toros and her Dibison/Gunsniper, Brad Hunter and his Command Wolf/Shadowfox, Jamie Hemeros and his Pteras/Raynos, and Steve Toros. Together they battle against other teams, the Backdraft Group, and Vega.
