Series Continuity

NOTE: This information has been updated since I played through the first game. Boy did I have a few things mixed up! ^_^

Yuna 3 looks like it takes place a few months after the second Yuna Anime OAV. In that OAV, Yuna gave a Christmas concert; at the beginning of Yuna 3, she's saying it's early Spring. So, the continuity goes:

  • Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (PC-Engine AKA Turbo Grafx 16)
    This was where it all started. Yuna won the Galaxy Fraulein Contest and became an idol singer like she had always dreamed. She also won her own space cruiser! She cranked out a few CDs, did some photo shoots, made some commercials, etc. One night, though, Elnar appeared in her bedroom in a flash of light scaring the crap out of her. Elnar told her she had to become the Savior of Light and go find three particular allies who were sealed away somewhere in the galaxy. So, Yuna set out to various planets and recovered Erina, Marina, and Jina. Along the way she was assaulted at every turn by the Army of the 13 Frauleins of Darkness whose weak hearts had let them be overtaken by the power of Darkness. She also had to defeat Ryudia. From time to time she was assisted by the mysterious Liavelt von Neuestein, who seemed to have a more sinister reason for tracking Yuna's every move...

    One interesting thing that I found surprising about this game: Yuna's only companions throughout the whole game are Elnar and the three other robots. When she beats each Fraulein of Darkness, they vanish back to where they were when they were taken over by Darkness (leaving shards of armor all over the ground ;). None of them show up again except for Ryudia, who helps Yuna from afar with her sorcery. Oh, and Mai; she's too annoying to only get thrashed once. ^_^ (The first time Yuna fights her, Mai doesn't even realize who Yuna is; she's just fighting Yuna because Yuna failed to look jealous when Mai was bragging. ^_^ She shows back up later with some armor enhancements saying "Alright, this time it's for real!" She also shows up again a third time but she's being her usual noisy self outside a library and the patrons dump a case of books on her out the window. ^_^) Definitely a contrast to the other parts of the series I've seen, where she has 30+ allies helping her along!

  • Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Remix (Sega Saturn)
    This is a Saturn rendition of the first game - not the first two games, as I discovered the hard way. I'm not sure what parts were updated from the original but judging by some screenshots of the original I've seen the graphics were touched up a lot. Also the original game may not have had character voices in it. Meanwhile, I found an AVI file on Turbo-List.com that says it's from Yuna for PC-Engine and it looks like part of the fight between Yuna and Lia but I certainly didn't see it in Yuna Remix... so either it's part of the Intro and they replaced that or it's a video sequence that they took out. ;_;

  • Galaxy Fraulein Yuna 2 (PC-Engine)
    This game is where the Erika 7, Princess Mirage, Yuuri and Polylina come in. I get the impression that Princess Mirage thinks the Earth is full of uncivilized people and decides to destroy the Earth using the main cannon on her starship, the Eternal Princess. She probably sends the Erika 7 to take out Yuna so that Yuna can't interfere with her plans. I'm sure it's the Forces of Darkness at work again, though.

  • Galaxy Fraulein Yuna FX (PC-FX)
    This was a special limited edition game that came out near the end of the PC-FX's lifecycle. It exactly mirrors the first Anime OAV. I saw some screenshots from it and at first I thought they were stills out of the Anime. Apparently it has several cute mini-games; for instance the part where Yuuri throws Yuna out on a rope to hit the speedboat that the villains are kidnapping Taro-chan in is a mini-game where you play Yuuri and you have to tap the buttons as fast as possible to spin Yuna around and throw her and to reel her back in.

  • Galaxy Fraulein Yuna: Sorrowful Selene (first Anime OAV)
    This is the first Anime OAV. I heard it was made by the same people as Dragon Half, and it shows; it's one of the nuttiest productions I've ever seen. ^_^ Apparently it's a radical departure from the rest of the series in terms of tone; most of the video games are more like the second OAV. Note that Selene is a goodess of the moon, whereas Saline (present in ADV's title) is the fluid that comes out of your tear ducts (basically saltwater). I'm sure ADV was trying to make it a joke of some sort...

  • Galaxy Fraulein Yuna: Dawn of the Dark Sisters (second Anime OAV - this is ADV Films' title, not the original)
    If you haven't seen this one, see it. Now. It's what got me really hooked on this series. It's very different from the first OAV; like the difference between a teddy bear and a grizzly bear. It still has its share of comedy, but it's more focused on building the characters and their relationships and then using them to have an impact on your emotional state.

  • Galaxy Fraulein Yuna 3: Lightning Angel (Sega Saturn - also released for Playstation as "GF Yuna Final Edition")
    This is the game that I'm translating here. It's a continuation of the second OAV. If you haven't seen the second OAV, there are some spoilers in the translation; you ought to see the second OAV first. You can find it at your local Suncoast or Media Play, or online at places like www.amazon.com or www.buy.com.
