a.k.a. The Wolf Brigade

[REVIEWED BY ISAAC HAYWARD]

Written and supervised by : Mamoru Oshii
Director : Okiura Hiroyuki
Producer : Mitsuhisa Ishikawa
Produced by : Production I.G.
Year : 1999
Duration : 98minutes
Genre : Futuristic Adventure/ Romance

The crowd went wild as Mr Takahata stepped up to talk of JIN-RO in place of Mr Oshi. He humorously claimed that since he was a close friend of Mr Oshi , he could get inside his brain and let us know about Mr Oshi’s two movies, Blood and Jin-Ro. Mr Oshi was unavoidably called back home for a family bereavement and I know all our sympathy goes out to him at this time.

There were many factors that lead to the creation of the Jin-Roh universe that closely resembles our own. Many factors that have upset much of the japanime American public due to the fact that at a key turning point in Americas history when they claimed victory over Germany and Japan in the Second World War, Jin-Roh sees America loosing its battle to Germany. This lead to a change in world powers and sent America down into public rebellions and social upheaval! As a result underground gorilla groups were formed to help combat the obressing powers, and in response a special law-enforcement group was established to help combat Gurilla warfare, the wolf brigade, or also know as Jin-Roh.

Set thirty years after America’s loss to Germany one such large social upheaval is in progress. The police lines hold fast as protesters swarm in defiance, outside range of their weapons. But amongst the civilian ranks with the aid of the cities sewer system, a gurilla group makes assultive attacks on the police front lines with bombs. These explosive cocktails are being transported by young girls through the dark tunnels. Over the years, a nickname has developed for these children of revolution, dressed all in red they came to be called ‘Little Red Riding Hood’s’, always seeking their destination through the dark woods with the ever-present threat of the wolf blocking their path.

It is the beautiful relationship of this label that holds the movie together in perfect harmony, the age old tale being told through-out the movie until little red riding hood is lulled into a false security and seduced by the wolf.

The precision in detail for this picture is a true triumph as, smoke, water and bodily behavior are duplicated to incredible precision. It was said by many after the viewing of this film that with the plot and the functioning of the movie it could be simply have been done in a real life movie production. But as it was high-lighted, such precision in the acting and plot could not have been achieved in any other medium than animation.

As you follow the story of one of the Jin-Roh who intercepts one of the red riding hoods, who kills herself rather than be caught, you are swept up into the emotions and very involved plot of deception and betrayal as politics and emotions combined to create a very satisfying movie experience!

While the plot does develop very slowly and the love involved with the characters does become very confusing and secrets and events unveil themselves it can become a very frustrating and for some a boring experience. But in my opinion I did enjoy it, and I will see it again to help figure out some of the details I couldn’t decipher in my first viewing.
