[REVIEWED BY ISAAC HAYWARD]

Let me say from the outset, Ive never been a comic book person, Ive never found it an intresting or effective medium and turned instead to novels in a reading mood. But from when I picked up Bone’s first book, ‘Out of Boneville’ it only took me twenty pages before I was hooked.

The story started out simply, three strange creatures, the Bone cousins, are run out of town due to a dispute, they become lost in the desert, are seperated by a cloud of locusts, find themselves trapped in a strange and beautiful valley as winter hits and the one named “Pone Bone’ meets ‘Thorn’ who is human. What ensues is a smorgusboard of pure fantasy drawn by a very talented artist. As Pone Bone tries desperately to find his brothers he is slowly introduced to the other human occupants of the valley, and as it soon becomes obvious, their dark past, of both themselves and the valley around them, that is coming back to haunt them all.

The ‘Rat Creatures’ are searching for a Bone Creature that bears a star, the dragons of old have come out of hidding to protect Pone Bone, a mysterious cloaked figure lurks in the shadows and an unknown evil power is infesting dreams. All of this just as introduction in the first book to the epic quest which is ‘BONE’.

But don’t think that all of this amazing story is based on breath-taking action and heated and heartfelled confrontations. Comedy is one of the story’s main plot elements at the start and remains throughout as Jeff Smith displays his talents of being able to take the comedy of the Bone’s interacting with this strange enviroment and each other to swash-buckling adventure in a single frame.

But it doesnt stop there, within this well constructed world his characters have been given real heart, the ability to love, laugh, cry, pain and hate along with the reader. This incures some very tense momments between characters later in the story. Then to finish it all off the artwork is unsrpased by an american comic artist I have seen to date, being simple and artistic in a single instance.

The ‘BONE’ series has 6 books released at present with three more in production to create Jeff Smith’s original vision of a trilogy of 3 acts over 9 books. Join the epic now at all good comic stores, and keep your eyes pasted to Review as we review a new Bone Book each month over then next 7 months!
