(All info taken from what little I've read of the Japanese manga[Egyptian Arc], and that little bit of flashback in the anime[dub] so, take heed, it may be incorrect in some places!!)


During the reign of Pharaoh Akunamukanon, Seto was born and trained to be a priest, and received the Sennen/Millenium Rod.

During the reign of Pharaoh Yami[real name?], High Priest Akunadin is killed by Bakura(?), a thief king, and Seto is placed in the status of High Priest, the position held by Akunadin before. This replacement choice is probably due to the fact that Seto was the most powerful priest at the time(I haven't read this part yet).

Anyway, as Bakura once warned, Seto turned against his Pharaoh, forcing the battle we witnessed in the anime between an older and much more experienced Pharaoh and his most-trusted friend and priest.
Hence comes about the duel that ends one of the two's lives. I am almost positive Pharaoh wins, but don't take my word for that!
