It was a brilliant blinding light, brighter than anything Dirx had ever seen. He clasped at the ground hard, fearing that this was indeed the end of them all. The shock of light shot down from their pedestal in the sky, crashing to the ground, enveloping the body of the creature. It shone golden for a second, and then became one with the light, disappearing from view. Anarchy tried to stand, but it was no use. The whole place was shaking, it seemed as though the world would soon collapse in on itself.

“The whole new world” Anarchy spat sarcastically. We came here for nothing… A tear formed in his eye just as the laughter began resounding from the ground, the lost souls mocking them in their last instants of life.

“This can’t be it!” Pumpkin yelled, shielding his eyes with his blue sleeve. “I WILL NOT DIE LIKE THIS!” He managed to lift himself to his feet, and ran forward, toward the light, stumbling consistently as he went. His cane held high above his head, he dropped to his knees just in front of the blinding view. The laughter became louder, and dark smog began to rise from the mouths of the creatures below. At first it seemed as though it had no intended purpose, drifting around the field akin to a leaf being carried along a lake, slowly, eerily. Then suddenly the clouds danced erratically, dashing towards the light.

Pumpkin felt the evil within them, and he desperately tried to prevent their reaching the light. They merely passed through him, winding him, causing him to fall forward to the charred ground beneath his robe.

Delen tried to control her fear, grimacing, she ran to Pumpkin’s side, the other’s followed suit. Dirx noticed TC looking as serious as he had ever seen him, it scared him deeply.

Anarchy watched the ensuing drama as his circumstantial comrades tried to aid their injured friend. He wondered if anyone would have done the same for him, and frowned. He knew no one cared for him, not even his own family gave a damn about a child that couldn’t pass their Hunter’s Exam. The angered thief took a sat himself on the ground, awaiting his impending doom. Maybe it would be better this way…

The robed man known as Pumpkin rolled onto his back as his companions approached, his face was expressionless.

“This is it guys.” He grunted. “This could be our last few minutes together, I want you to know…”

“We ain’t gonna die tonight PK, this isn’t how it’s s’posed to end.” TC pretended to smile, lifting his friend to a sitting position. “Don’t you remember? When we took our Hunter’s Exam together we knew how it would end. We’d be heroes, go down in history. Die of old age…” He blinked a tear away. “That’s how it’s gonna be pal, so don’t give me none of that crap. We’ll beat this, just like we beat everything else.”

Pumpkin tried to believe him, he desperately longed to, but he couldn’t, this was too big for anyone to defeat, they had tried, and that was all anyone could ask of them.

Dirx put his arm around Delen as they watched the two friends, barely noticing the creature forming from the pits of hell behind them. He turned to her.

“What do you think?”

“About what? Whether we’re going to get out of here?”

Dirx nodded.

She thought for a moment, she too was losing hope. They had no idea of what would come next, and how many more times they could kill this creature and it come back to life stronger than before. But she knew they had no chance of destroying such a dangerous adversary without a belief they could do it. She convinced herself of their combined abilities, and turned back to Dirx.
