Gourry is Lina's so-called protector. They met after Lina had stolen some treasure from a bandit gang called the Dragon Fang. Some bandits came after her to reclaim their treasure and Gourry came to her rescue killing the bandits. Gourry was dissapointed that he had saved a "little girl" instead of a babe. However, Gourry felt that it was his duty to accompany Lina on her trip to Atlas City and they have been traveling together ever since. In one of the episodes of NEXT, Gourry even said that he would protect Lina for the rest of his life.
Gourry wields the legendary Sword of Light, which channels its user's will into energy. Gourry is a very skilled swordsman, but is as dumb as a rock. He often asks questions that seem dumb, but helps the audience understand the story. Like Lina, Gourry eats lots of food.
Gourry may be a descendant of Rowdy Gabriev and Meliroon whom Lina saved in Slayers: The Motion Picture. Also, Rowdy must have passed the Sword of Light, the Gabriev family heirloom, down to Gourry.
