During Yusuke's first mission, he encounterd Hiei, who, despite his size, proved to be quite the troublemaker. Hiei is uncharachteristically short, but he also has ungodly, superhuman speed, capable of moving faster than the human eye can follow, and is also an expert swordsman.
Behind Hiei's headband is a third eye called the Eye of Jagan. This allows him to have incredible, superhuman sight. In his transformed demon state, Hiei's entire body is covered with eyes that allow him to see anything around him, though the eyes are useless if the main eye on his forehead is blinded, something Yusuke learned when Kurama covered it with blood from his wound during Yusuke and Hiei's first fight.
Hiei, along with Gouki and Kurama, stole three ancient artifacts from Spirit World with hopes of using them for each ones own means (though not all intentions were evil; see Kurama). Hiei stole the ancient Shadow Sword, which had a poisonous blade that could turn anything it cut into a mindless demon. In an effort to retrieve the other two artifacts (The Orb of Baast and the Forlorn Hope) to use at his disposal as well, Hiei kidnapped and cut Yusuke's best friend Kayko Ukimura. While in battle with Hiei, Yusuke was able to successfully reflect his Spirit Gun off of the Forlorn Hope and hit Hiei. Later, Hiei returned, this time to aid Yusuke in Maze Castle in exchange for a clean state in Spirit World, though he seems to be going through a difficult transformation, as Hiei is actually beginning to like Yusuke!
