'Painter in his Studio with Students'. Kawahara Keiga.

In this artwork, a painter instructs two samurai students (identifiable by their samurai hairstyle) to capture the 'essence' of nature in their painting. It is highly likely that the painter is of a low social group, since many artists lived in urban centers (like Edo), in the hope of making a living from selling or teaching painting or calligraphy to urban samurai or wealthy artisans-and-merchants.
