Stargates are what this whole show is based on! (no shit)
Stargates are circular structures that once dialed properly, it will unleash a wormhole and all you have to do is just walk into it and you'll find yourself on another planet momentarily.
The Stargates were built by a race called "The Ancients". Yes, Jack got his head stuck in this grabbing thing and he posessed the knowledge of the Ancients 2 times throughout the seasons. Once in season 2 and again on the last episode of season 7.
The Stargate can be found on a LOT of planets. Just.. not the ones visible from Earth. =P
