Disclaimer: I do not own Inu-Yasha. Rumiko Takahashi (and Kagome of course) owns him. Lucky for them! I want to own a strong, sexy half-demon with furry white ears and gold eyes… eyes that are violet on the new moon! ::Breaks into tears:: It’s not fair DAMNIT!

Authors Notes: Hello! This is my 2nd fanfic ever and my first IY fic. Personally, I like it… I like it a lot, and if you don’t, well that’s just too bad! I would like everyone to know that in this fic. Kagome and Inu-Yasha listen to The Fool by Lee Ann Womack. During that part in the story if you would just like forget that IY and Kagome don’t speak English. Thanx! (Things written in :: :: are thoughts)

The Dance of Souls

By: ArouraLenoa

Inspired by Lee Ann Womack’s The Fool

"Damn math test! No matter how hard I study, it never gets any easier!" Kagome threw her algebra book across the room and plopped down on her bed. She closed her eyes and let her favorite guilty pleasure soothe her frazzled nerves… American County music. Her most closely guarded secret passion. ::Except Inu-Yasha:: "Shut-up!" Then the song changed and Kagome heard Lee Ann Womack’s warm voice begin to sing. Without thinking Kagome added her lovely voice to the song.

You don't know me but I know who you are
Mind if I sit down
Do I look familiar if I don't well I should
I'm sure you've seen me around I know you've probably heard my name
Though we've not been introduced

(I am her likeness, I am her, and oh how it hurts)

I'm the fool in love with the fool
Who's still in love with you

(He kissed her! I don’t want him to be unhappy… but I didn’t think that he would kiss her!)

If you've got a minute I'll buy you a drink
I've got something to say
It might sound crazy but last night in his sleep
I heard him call out your name

(So many times I wake up and find him whispering her name. Sometimes he looks at me.)

This ain't the first time he's done it before
And it's hard to face the truth

(I look like her, that is all that I am. A copy.)

I'm the fool in love with the fool
Who's still in love with you

(How I love him! Why did she have to come back? Why does he never see me when she is there)

I know love is a fragile thing
And I'm trying hard to make it last
But it ain't easy holding on to my dream
When he's holding on to the past

(Their past was so strong. He tried to give up part of his self for her. There is no way I can break that.)

Just one more thing before I go
I'm not here to put you down
You don't love him and that's a fact
Girl I've seen you around

(She’s says that she loved him, but all she wants to do is to drag him into hell. Is that love?)

But you hold his heart in the palm of your hand
And it's breaking mine in two

(I cannot bear to see him hold her again. It hurts too much. Why do I have to care?!)

'Cause I'm the fool in love with the fool
Who's still in love with you,
I'm the fool in love with the fool Who's still in love with you

Kagome’s eyes snapped open and her voice caught in her throat as her brain realized the meaning of the words that she had just sung. A bitter smile appeared on her face. ::How very fitting:: As the last bars of the song were playing Kagome grabbed her stereo remote and pressed "repeat". As the song started over all of the stress and depression she’d been fighting for the past year fell heavily on her. She felt a hot tear roll down her cheek. A river of pure sorrow soon followed it as she turned to weep into her pillow. The only sound that penetrated her sobs was those last lines. She screamed into her pillow and continued to cry as the song began again. Over and over again she heard it: I’m the fool in love with the fool, who’s still in love with you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Outside of Kagome’s window two golden orbs watched her sorrow-ridden form. Most would call him dense, but even he understood the scene in front of him.
Understood that he was the cause of her pain. He could hear the song, could hear her muffled screams, and he could see her gasping for breath in-between sobs. Pain and torture radiated from her room, and just looking at her made him feel even more evil than Naraku.
He heard that damned song begin once more, "Why in the Seven Hells is that wench torturing herself like this?" His heart was screaming for him to go take her in his arms and kiss her pain away, but he couldn’t do that. She deserved so much better than a half-demon that had nothing to give her. ::What if she doesn’t think that there is anything better? What if all she wants is you?:: He growled deep in his throat. Why the fuck did he have to think things like that, damn it?! Why couldn’t he just be cold and unfeeling like he was before she came into his life? Why did she have to be so beautiful so… sweet, kind… so perfect? "If only I could just… no I shouldn’t." ::Shouldn’t? More like you’re too damn scared! She is dying of heartbreak in there, and its your fault! You love her and you damn well know it. Now get over the past and go to her!!:: With that Inu-Yasha gathered every bit of courage he possessed and walked into her room. Kagome wasn’t even aware he was there; she couldn’t hear him over the music and her tears. He walked over to the box projecting the offensive song and pulled out one of the rope things that came out of it. The song ended abruptly causing the tension in Inu-Yasha’s shoulders to ease a little. It also caused Kagome to sit up in fear.
Upon realizing who was in the room with her, the fear left Kagome’s face and was replaced once more with painful sorrow. She quickly masked her sadness with (somewhat) false anger and wiped away the newest tear to grace her cheek.
"W-what are you doing here?" She demanded softly.
"I just… I came to see when you were coming back. The little fox misses you and he whines nonstop."
She looked at her bed, "A day or two, I need some… rest. Now if that’s all…" She glanced at him quickly and then looked back to her bed.
"N-no, there was… I mean. Kagome what do you think of me?"
She drew her eyes from the bed to him, but she did not look him in the face. "You are very strong, and protected me, and kept me from dying more times than I can recall. You are a… friend and you are also very secretive." She then looked into his golden eyes. "I wish you would talk to me more."
::If it would make you happy I would never stop. I really don’t want to hurt you Kagome, but I cannot tell which will hurt you more: staying or going.::
"I’ve never talked to anyone except my mother, but you know more about me than she ever did. More than anyone has ever… and will ever know." ::Please understand what that means!::
Her eyes traveled back to the bed and she muttered softly, "I doubt that." ,p>"K-ka-go-me" Inu-Yasha was barely able to choke out her name as he watched her resolve fade, depression too deep to keep at bay. Two more tears fell down her soft cheeks. Knowing that he was the cause of her grief shattered his heart; just as her arrow had once shattered the Shikon no Tama. He cautiously made his way to her bed and sat down beside her. He tried to catch her eyes, but she refused to even look at him.
He knew that he should be soft with her, she was hurting, but he was becoming very angry with himself for not being able to just come out and say what he felt. ::Why can she not understand?:: "Kagome… I… damn it woman! What the hell makes you think I loved her so much?"
Her eyes shot to him and held his. "Wh—at?"
"Fuck it Kagome! I liked her, yes. That was all I thought I needed. She had never killed me, and we were both tired of being alone, but I didn’t LOVE her! We did not even know eachother! We were lonely, and complimented eachother to the extent that neither of us fit in with the rest of the world. The feelings I had for her 50 years ago were NOTHING compared to how much I c…" He choked on the word. Then he looked at her, at the little spark in her eyes. She wanted for him to say he cared, but she daren’t hope for it. That would only hurt more. He couldn’t stand to let her continue to suffer that way.
"…care for… how much I love you now!"
Kagome’s head snapped up in shock and she searched his eyes for truth in his words. For her Inu-Yasha did something he’d never done for anyone; he opened himself completely up to her and let everything he felt show in his eyes. He did not let anything he felt be hidden.
Kagome’s eyes widened and she gasped softly at the intensity of the emotions that were in his eyes, and the knowledge that she was seeing a part of him that he had never allowed to be seen. Relief caused her eyes, again, to fill with tears.
"Oh Kagome p-please don’t cry!" He placed his rough hands on her soft cheeks and pressed his forehead against hers. A solitary tear trembled on her eyelashes and fell, but before it could slide down the length of her cheek Kagome felt Inu-Yasha’s warm lips stop it. Then they brushed down to her trembling lips and pressed against them gently.
By using all the will power he could muster he pulled back to look into her eyes. He had to make certain that this was all right, that he wasn’t just hurting her more. All he saw in her eyes was him…
He felt her arms snake around his neck; her warm, supple body press against his; felt her nails press into his shoulder and the back of his neck; felt her tongue running eagerly over his lips…
That was all the certainty he needed. He rapped his own strong arms around her waist and pulled her even tighter against him. His lips parted and he let his tongue dance with hers, just as their souls were dancing. ::If ever anyone could taste Heaven, I’m sure I am at this moment:: He pushed her back against her bed and lay almost completely on top of her, running his hands over her body and through her silky hair. He broke the kiss to let her catch her breath (He didn’t need to, he’s a demon after all, but he know that she had to). As she was gasping for air, he rubbed his nose in the niche between the base of her neck and he left shoulder. ::Gods! She truly has the sent of an Angel:: He sighed contentedly and began to trace little circles on her right arm.
Kagome’s breathing steadied and she shifted beneath her love so that they were eye to eye. She felt herself falling into his golden eyes, and he fell into her gray ones. In the gray and golden depths of their souls they realized something that should have been obvious long ago.
As they returned to reality an ambrosial breeze entered the room and danced around the two lovers. With it came a whispered phrase, two enchanting words, that the pair would later swear were spoken by the sweet lilting voice of Inu-Yasha’s mother.
