The Farewell

By: Coolgurl

Kagome ran though the woods as fast as her legs could carry her. Her hair flying back as she raced to get away from what had just occurred. Tears poured down her eyes and no matter how hard she tried to stop them, they wouldn't recede.

'Why? Why did it have to end like this?' Kagome thought as she came to a steady halt to catch her breath by some cherry blossom trees.

She raised an arm to try and wipe away the tears that were falling down her face. She sniffled and cried.

"Why? Why did you have to go InuYasha?" Kagome said as her voice got increasingly louder, "Why did you have to die?"

Kagome's voice became a whimper as her legs collapsed below her and she fell to her knees sobbing. Her heart was in a panic and she felt like it was being pulled from her chest.

"I didn't even get the chance to tell you how I feel," Kagome stated sadly to herself as the sun slide behind a cloud and the surrounding area became slightly darker.

Kagome closed her eyes and clutched her hands over her heart as she tried to make the ache and pain go away. It was then she heard a whisper.

"Kagome."

The sound came quietly at first, but then became slightly louder.

"Kagome?"

Kagome opened her eyes and looked up. Her eyes widened in shock as she saw a human InuYasha standing there before her.

"InuYasha?" Kagome asked as she shakily stood up, her hands still over her heart.

The person nodded. It was then that Kagome noticed that he wasn't completely solid.

"You're not real are you? You're just an illusion of my imagination," Kagome stated sadly.

"Iie," InuYasha replied as he slowly walked closer to her.

"But, I thought that you," Kagome stopped short. She couldn't seem to muster the words.

InuYasha was standing right in front of her now. His hand reached up and wiped the almost dried up tears away. Kagome could feel the slight warmth radiating from his hand as it came in contact with her cheek.

"Why are you here?" Kagome asked as she tried to engrave the memory of his touch in her mind.

"There was something I forgot to do," he replied with a face that Kagome couldn't read.

Kagome's immediate thought was that he had to tell Kikyou what had happened.

"And what was that?" Kagome asked, her voice stammering slightly.

"This," he simply stated as he grabbed her hand and pulled her to him.

He held her hand against his chest as he lowered his face and pressed his lips gently against hers. Kagome was in shock at first, but slowly melted into the kiss and innocently kissed him back. They stayed like that for a minute before InuYasha slowly pulled away. He pulled away just enough to look Kagome straight in the eye.

"I love you Kagome," InuYasha stated as he kept constant eye contact with her.

Kagome held a look of confusion and shock over her face.

"But I thought that you loved Ki," Kagome started, but was stopped when he gently placed a finger against her lips.

"I thought I loved her, but it wasn't until I met you that I realized what true love was," he answered.

Slowly he let go of her, stepped back, and started to fade away.

"Sayonara," he whispered as his image became fainter and fainter.

It took Kagome two seconds to realize that she was about to lose her chance. She dashed forward and grabbed his arm.

"Matte!" she yelled as she clung onto him for dear life and tears became to form in her eyes once again.

His body became a little less transparent. Kagome looked at him straight in the eye. She leaned forward and place a gentle, innocent kiss upon his lips.

"I love you too InuYasha. I always have," Kagome answered after she pulled her face away from his, a smile on her face.

InuYasha smiled. "I'll see you later okay?" he asked.

Kagome nodded. He pulled her to him once again and kissed her deeply on the lips. The sun slowly began to come out from behind the cloud. As it did InuYasha's body began to fade away. Soon Kagome felt his presence slowly disappear.

"Sayonara," the wind whispered.

Kagome held two fingers to her lips as she smiled and wiped the access tears from her eyes.

"Sayonara InuYasha," Kagome whispered into the wind as the sun began to shine once again in the blue sky.
