Author’s note: I don’t own the song ‘Concrete Angel’ by Martina McBride, but I tweaked the lyrics a bit to fit the story. I also don’t own Yu-Gi-Oh. Oh, and in one line I couldn’t think of a word to replace lace. (Hey! That rhymes!)
~~Song Lyrics~~
~~He walks to school with the lunch he packed
Nobody knows what he’s holdin’ back
Wearin’ the same outfit he wore yesterday
He hides the bruises with linen and lace~~
“Hi, Yugi, how are you?” asked a cheerful silver-haired boy.
“I’m just fine, Ryou.” Yugi replied, smiling. The teacher walked in and saw Ryou.
“Good morning Miss Neko.”
Miss Neko looked at him curiously. “Good morning, Ryou.”
~~The teacher wonders but she doesn’t ask
It’s hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes he wishes he was never born~~
“So, Ryou, want to come and spend the night at my place?” asked Yugi, “Since it’s Friday. Then we can go to the arcade tomorrow.”
“No thank you, Yugi. My father wouldn’t let me.” Ryou replied politely.
Yugi shrugged. “Okay.”
~~Through the wind and the rain
He stands hard as a stone
In a world that he can’t rise above
But his dreams give him wings
And he flies to a place where he’s loved
Concrete angel~~
“Bakura! Stop it!” Ryou said grabbing his darker’s wrist. Bakura smirked evilly and brought the whip down twice as hard.
“That’s for resisting! Now, shut up!” Bakura snarled, whipping the poor boy.
~~Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it’ll be too late~~
Bakura kicked the boy aside and smirked as he plopped onto the couch. Ryou lay there, not moving, but silently praying for help.
~~Through the wind and the rain
He stands hard as a stone
In a world that he can’t rise above
But his dreams give him wings
And he flies to a place where he’s loved
Concrete Angel~~
“Hey, Ryou, are you home? Ryou?” Yugi called. Ryou’s dad opened the door.
“Ryou’s in intensive care at the hospital. They say he might not make it.”
Yugi ran to the hospital.
“Ryou……” Yugi said, holding his friend’s hand gently. Ryou opened his eyes. “Ryou, who did this to you?”
“My Yami did. The spirit of the Ring.” Ryou said weakly.
“I’ll get him. He’ll pay for what he’s done. I promise.”
Ryou smiled faintly before slipping into unconsciousness.
~~A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel boy with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot~~
“Bakura! You’ll pay for hurting the innocent one.” Yami Yugi said, stepping forward. “I propose a Shadow Duel.”
Bakura smirked. “Very well, but you shall not win!” The background turned into that of the Shadow Realm, and a game mat was spread in between them.
“Duel!” they said, their LP count at 2000.
~~Through the wind and the rain
He stands hard as a stone
In a world that he can't rise above
But his dreams give him wings
And he flies to a place where he's loved
Concrete angel~~
“I win, Bakura. I now banish you to the Shadow Realm!” Yami Yugi said, holding his hand out.
“One moment, please. Let me talk to Yugi.” Bakura pleaded. Yami Yugi sighed.
“Very well.” A light flashed and faded, and Yugi was standing there. “What do you want, Yami no Bakura?”
“Yugi, I know you think I’m pretty evil, but I have a gentler side; one that has fallen in love with my hikari. I only hit him out of instinct. Please, give me a second chance!”
Yugi sighed. “Okay, but if you screw up big time and hurt Ryou, it’s straight to the Shadow Realm for you!”
“Okay.”
They left the Shadow Realm and walked to go see Ryou in the hospital. When they reached the room that Ryou was in, Ryou’s father was there. He saw Bakura and stood up, scared. Yugi realized that Bakura looked VERY evil and sadistic, even when he wasn’t trying.
“W-Who are you?” Ryou’s father asked.
Bakura smirked. “My name is Yami no Bakura, Yami Bakura, or Khati. But I prefer being called Khati.”
“Yami no Bakura? What does that mean?”
Yugi stepped in. “It means ‘Dark of Bakura’. Remember the Ring you got for your son? This spirit dwelled within it. He is still sort of evil and sadistic, but can be nice when he wants to be. I suggest you and I leave, lest our spirits dwell in a playing card for the rest of time.” Yugi said, dragging the surprised father out of the room. Bakura walked over and looked at Ryou’s sleeping face.
(Yami no Bakura’s POV)
I looked at my hikari’s sleeping face and smile. Drawing his hand into mine, I kiss his forehead gently.
“Ryou, aibou, even if you don’t forgive me, I want you to know that I’m sorry, and I love you. I’ve been a real jerk to you lately, and don’t deserve a second chance.” I said. Ryou opened his eyes.
“Really? You really love me?” he asked.
“Yes. Aishiteru, aibou.” I replied.
“A-Aishiteru, Khati!”
He sat up, leaned forward, and I kissed him lightly on the lips.
“I’ll never leave you. I promise.”
I heard the nurse come in.
“We’ve checked everything out and he seems to be fine. Ryou, you can go home now!” she said happily. Ryou helped her pull out all the wires and junk, and then got dressed in his usual blue jeans, sweater, and green shirt, which he wore under the sweater. Together, we walked out into the hallway, where Yugi, Yami, and, he looked a bit spooked, Ryou’s dad.
“Come on, Ryou. Let’s get you home.”
