The First Thing You Need To Know!
More advice to wannabe Rockers
The Essential Info!
First Step for any rocker- unless you just want to get on people's nerves, the first thing you need to do is learn to sing or play a musical instrument, or both. Some standard rock instruments are the electric guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums, however, if you are very creative you can feel free to try others. George Harrison brought the sitar into his music, and Fleetwood Mac included a marching band in one of their songs! Only do this if you are really into the idea of being a non traditional band.
Second Step for any rocker- decide if you are going to start a group or go solo. Most solo rockers are female, but their are some exceptions, notably Rod Stewart and post Police Sting. You also may want to join someone else's band, which can be great since starting your own is a lot of work. Never join a band if you can't stand the other members... you will regret it later after spending months in eachother's company while touring.
Third Step for any rocker- practice until your brains rot. Start writeing your own material unless you wish to be a slave to songwriters that have no idea what goes on in your brain. Or you can always be a cover band and play old Aerosmith and Metalica songs. Your call.
Fourth Step for any rocker- Before you ever preform live, even small local gigs, learn a little about copyright law and the legal system. Sounds painful and boreing, but it's absolutely essential.
Fifth Step for any rocker- as you get good and establish a local fan base through live performances, be working hard on your song writeing. When you are ready, make a demo! This can be easily done on a home computer with a microphone and some software, or their are some professional studios that you can rent. Once again, your call.
Sixth Step for any rocker- Enjoy yourself! You are a musician! Have fun playing the music you love!
