The first movie takes place about 4 years prior to the events of Digimon Adventure. It focuses primarilly on Taichi and Hikari and their first encounter with a digimon. There isn't a whole lot of action, but it still sets everything up for what happens later.
Taichi wakes up in the middle of the night and goes to the bathroom. As he comes back, he spots his little sister Hikari gazing at the computer screen. Taking a look, Taichi sees a large, strange-looking egg on the screen. It looks so real...as if it were coming right out of the screen...
The next thing Taichi remembers is waking up the next morning. His mom has left for the store, and left Taichi to look after his sister. As he glances over at Hikari, still asleep in bed, he does a double take; she's holding the egg from last night under her arm!
Later, as Taichi fixes breakfast, the egg begins to roll away from Hiari all on its own. She chases it around for a while, eventually following it into their bedroom, where it begins to hatch. A small black blob-looking creature with yellow eyes emerges from the egg; a Botamon. It immediately retreats under the bed. The two children try to coax the creature out, when Taichi throws his goggles at it. The Botamon responds by blowing bubbles at Taichi.
They finally get it out from under the bed. Hikari feeds the creature while Taichi tries to figure out what to do with it. Suddenly, the phone rings. Taichi goes to pick it up, but there's nothing but static. When he returns, he's shocked by what he discovers; the creature has transformed! It's now a Koromon; a round pink creature with long ears. Hikari takes their cat's food dish and gives it to the hungry Koromon. The creature is grateful and kisses Hikari, but Taichi thinks at first its attacking her and pulls him off.
As Koromon scarfs down his meal, their cat, Miko, comes in, angry at Koromon for eating his food. After a brief struggle, Miko carries his dish away, leaving Koromon with a scratch on his face, and Taichi with one on his hand for trying to break up the fight.
That evening, they find that the creature can talk. It tells them that's it's a Koromon and that it came from another world. Later that night, Taichi is woken up by Hikari; Koromon seems sick. His face is pale, and he has an odd expression on his face. Suddenly, all of the electronic appliances in the neighborhood go crazy again, as Koromon evolves to Agumon, a bright orange/yellow dinosaur-looking creature. But this Agumon is very different from the one we know from later on. This one is larger, and a lot more agressive. It smashes through their window and jumps out as Hikari follows on its back. Taichi runs out of the apartment in persuit.
Agumon wanders aimlessly through town, curious, but also very destructive. He tears up a soda machine, and he shoots a fireball at a truck that nearly hits him. As Hikari tries to calm him down, Taichi continues to follow. He finally catches up with them, when something appears in the sky...
It looks like a huge egg materializing out of the sky. When it opens up, a huge green bird, Parrotmon, flies out of it. It immediately flies in front of Agumon, who attacks it, in spite of Hikari's protests. His attacks have little effect on the giant bird however, and it launches a counter attack; a powerful ray of lightning that collapses the bridge over Taichi, Hikari, and Agumon.
The two children don't realize this, but they're being watched. Others have heard the noise outside and are watching what's happening out on their balconies. These are the other Chosen Children; Yamato, Takeru, Sora, Koushiro, Mimi, and Jou.
As the dust from the collapsed bridge clears, Taichi and Hikari are relieved to see that they're still alive; Agumon protected them, and now he's also evolved again. He's now Greymon, a huge T-Rex with a horned helmet. Greymon fights again with Parrotmon, but is once again overpowered. He is knocked out, as Parrotmon moves in to finish him off.
Hikari tries blowing her whistle to wake up Greymon, but the cold night has taken quite a toll on her, and has gotten somewhat sick. So Taichi takes it and blows it instead, as loud as he can. Greymon wakes up, and resumes his attack on Parrotmon. But as he does, a bright light envelopes both creatures, and when it dies down, both of them are gone. Hikari calls out to their new friend, but it's no use; he's gone.
This movie takes place about six months after the events of Digimon Adventure, after the defeat of Apocalymon and the Dark Masters.
Taichi is writing an e-mail to Sora. Apparently, the two of them got into a fight some time ago, and Taichi is writing to apologize. Hikari comes in, showing off the dress she's wearing to a friend's birthday party. When Taichi turns around, he accidently bumps a key that sticks a heart next to his name on the e-mail... To make matters worse, Hikari sends off the e-mail. Taichi scolds her about sending his e-mail without asking, then she leaves. When Taichi turns back to the screen, he sees that he e-mail was rejected. He then starts flipping out even more.
Meanwhile, Koushiro is messing around on the Internet, when he spots something; a digimon egg...what's it doing on the Internet? Before he can do anyting, the egg suddenly hatches, and a baby Kuramon emerges. Koushiro immediatly takes off to Taichi's apartment.
Taichi tells his mother he's annoyed that Hikari will get to eat cake at the party. His mom then offers to bake a cake as well. Taichi gets an egg out of the fridge when the dorbell rings. It's Koushiro, out of breath, muttering that "the egg has hatched". Taichi looks at the egg he's holding, somewhat confused, when Koushiro explains that it's a digimon egg.
Koushiro shows the baby digimon to him on his laptop. Taichi doesn't seem too worried, until Koushiro tells him that a net buddy of his did a scan on it, and it seems to be composed entirely of computer viruses that had somehow merged together. Before anything else can be done, the creature evolves to its second baby stage, then sends out an e-mail; "I'm hungry". Koushiro and Taichi then realize that the digimon feeds on computer data, and it's causing computers around the city to malfunction.
The two head to the computer room and hook their computers together. As they do this, Taichi asks if it's possible to just delete the creature. Koushiro just scoffs at the question. Taichi then says that they should probably call a computer expert about it. Koushiro brushes that aside too, saying his net buddy already did that, and no one would take him seriously.
When their computers are finally online, they see that the digimon has already evolved again to its child stage, Keramon. Taichi's spirits plummet; at the speed this thing it's evolving, there seems to be nothing they can do to stop this creature. Suddenly, he starts to hear Agumon's voice. He thinks he's just imagining it at first, but Koushiro indicates that he's getting a transmission from Gennai and Agumon. Tentomon is there as well, along with the other digimon. Gennai also seems aware of the digimon that's attacking the Internet, and he says he can send Agumon and Tentomon in as well to fight it.
As Agumon and Tentomon are sent off, Taichi goes and calls the others so their digimon can help too. He doesn't have much luck, though. Yamato and Takeru are visiting their grandma who lives out in the sticks, and the senile granny hangs up on Taichi when he asks to speak to him. Hikari is still having fun at her friend's party and isn't about to come home just because big brother tells her to. Jou is taking an entrance exam, Mimi is AWOL, and Sora still won't give Taichi the time of day. Koushiro asks Taichi what happened between them, but he just gets more agitated.
They go back to the computer room and find that Agumon and Tentomon are on the Internet and are searching for Keramon. Finally, they find him. The virus doesn’t see them, so the two of them launch a surprise attack. They shake Keramon up a little, but he quickly brushes it off and sends a taunting e-mail to Taichi and Koushiro saying “Let’s play!” Agumon and Tentomon evolve and the battle begins to turn in their favor. Victory seems at hand, but Keramon then evolves to Infermon, skipping his adult stage completely and going straight for his perfect form. Greymon and Kabuterimon give him all they’ve got, but nothing seems to work. They begin to evolve to MetalGreymon and AtlurKabuterimon, but Infermon is able to interrupt their evolution and he blasts them back to their child forms. Laughing, Infermon slithers away.
Taichi, meanwhile, is losing hope again, while Koushiro looks at his e-mail, noticing a huge surge of mail form kids all over the world who had seen the fight. Some of them offer encouragement; others just mock them and their digimon. Suddenly, Koushiro notices they got an e-mail from Infermon as well. He just says “Hello!” over and over again, but what Koushiro notices is where it’s coming from; the phone company! If he messes around with the phone lines, they could lose their Internet connection. Taichi tries to call everyone again, but it’s too late; he gets nothing but a busy signal everywhere he dials. The phone then rings, but when he answers it, he just hears Infermon’s voice saying “Hello!” over and over, just like his e-mail. It turns out Infermon is dialing every number on the switchboard, which eventually causes it to overload. And sure enough, Koushiro loses his Internet connection. He runs off to find something else to use.
Taichi, meanwhile, is sulking, wondering if they’ll ever stop this thing. He walks into the living room with his mom and looks at the TV. It says that due to the phone problems, an emergency voice-mail system was set up. This causes him to regain a little hope. Taichi calls the others again, telling them to call him back. When he gets to Mimi, that reminds his mom to give him a postcard that came for him from Mimi; she’s on vacation in Hawaii, which is why she couldn’t get back to him earlier.
Koushiro gets back, and he has a satellite cell phone that they can use to get on the Internet. As he sets it up, Taichi checks his messages. They got an answer from Yamato! Playing a little phone tag with the voice-mail system, they give Yamato and Takeru the rundown on what’s happening. Yamato says that their grandma doesn’t have a computer, and he and Takeru go searching around Shimane looking for one. They have little luck, as most of the people don’t have a computer and some have never even heard of one.
By the time Yamato and Takeru find a computer, Infermon has infected computer systems throughout North America. Gabumon and Patamon join Agumon and Tentomon and engage Infermon once more. Agumon and Gabumon warp evolve to WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon and they begin their assault on the spider-looking virus. Patamon starts evolving to Angemon, but Infermon once again interrupts his evolution, this time evolving to his ultimate stage, Diablomon, before pummeling Patamon into submission. Patamon is knocked out cold and Tentomon watches over him while WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon confront Diablomon. Everything seems to be going well, when suddenly Koushiro ducks out of the room to take a leak, due to all of the tea he’s been drinking up until now. When Diablomon dodges a dual Gaia Force and Cocytus Breath, Taichi hits the computer in frustration, causing it to crash.
Koushiro is less than happy when he returns from the bathroom, and has to boot the computer up again. They argue briefly, where Koushiro blurts out that this is precisely why Taichi and Sora get into fights. Taichi is a bit flustered that he brought Sora into this, but he explains that he got her a hairpin for a birthday present. Sora thought that meant Taichi didn’t like her hat, and she took it all personally.
When the computer is connected to the Internet again, Taichi and Koushiro see that Diablomon is nowhere in sight, and WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon are beat up badly. Yamato is quite upset and angrily asks where they went. Meanwhile, Koushiro looks at the new e-mail he got and starts reading it out loud. Some of it has some insulting comments toward WarGreymon, which sets Taichi off, taking his anger out on Koushiro. Yamato breaks them up, tough.
They then get another e-mail from Diablomon, “Who’s got the clock?” Everyone is puzzled by what this means. Suddenly, Diablomon begins to make copies of himself as a timer starts counting down from ten minutes. Koushiro gets another e-mail from someone saying the United States just launched a nuclear missile due to a bug in the computer system; Diablomon launched it! Suddenly it becomes clear; the nuke will detonate in less than ten minutes, and the one copy of Diablomon that has “the clock” is controlling it. If they can destroy it, they can stop the nuke. WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon assure everyone that they’ll stop Diablomon.
(As they look for Diablomon, we see some of the others watching this battle. One of them is Miyako, who late becomes a Chosen in Zero Two. Another is Ryo, who appears in some of the Japanese games as well as Tamers.)
As they arrive, everyone is shocked to find that the copies Diablomon has made now number at many tens of thousands. WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon do the best they can, but there are just way too many to deal with. In addition, they notice that the two digimon keep slowing down at the most inconvenient times. Koushiro realizes that all of the e-mails they’ve been getting are what’s slowing them down. He tries to e-mail them to tell them to stop, but WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon already lie motionless as the dust settles.
All Taichi can do is look on helpless, but as he does, he seems to actually be drawn into the computer as well and finds himself right next to WarGreymon. Looking around he sees Yamato is there as well, trying to bring MetalGarurumon around. Taichi tells WarGreymon that he’s here with him and that from now on, they’ll fight together. WarGreymon seems to respond, as does MetalGarurumon. Then, to everyone’s surprise, the two digimon fuse together, and form a celestial white knight, Omegamon.
Omegamon easily destroys the copies of Diablomon until just one is left; that one must have the clock. He attacks, but Diablomon is just too fast, and time is quickly running out. Just then, Koushiro gets an idea; he forwards all of the e-mail he’s received to Diablomon’s address. Just as it did with them, it slows him down long enough for Omegamon to destroy him. As he does, the missile touches down with seconds to spare, but it splashes down harmlessly. As Taichi and Koushiro are catching their breath, Sora opens her e-mail that has now gotten through. She smiles when she sees the heart next to Taichi’s apology.
