Clock Tower

Producer: ASCII
System: SNES
Year: 1995 (Japan only)

Overview: Resident Evil might have established he survival horror genre, but it wasn't the first one. Clock Tower is an early game of this kind that can easily rival the Capcom franchise.

Story: Four young ladies from a local orphanage; Jennifer, Ann, Laura, and Lotte, have just been adopted by a woman called Mary, and she is taking them to live with her in a mansion owned by a man called Simon Barrows known as the Clock Tower, due to the large clock tower in the mansion. You play as Jennifer, who’s about to discover the many dark secrets of the Clock Tower, and its dangerous inhabitants.

Graphics: Rather simplistic; the graphics aren't heavilly detailed, but the animation is excellent.

Sound: What sound? Seriously, there's no real music unless something major is happening, but that adds to the overall creepiness of everything.

Gameplay: The gameplay takes a little getting used to. You move Jen around not directly with the dirction button, but by moving a curser around the screen and clicking where you want to go. Clicking certain objects will allow you to examine them.

Challenge: A fair amount of challenge is involved in searching the house and discovering objects you need to advance. There are also numerous endings, which provides for a lot of replay value.

Final Rating: 8.5/10 Sadly, this game was never released in the US, although its sequals were. You should still be able to find a ROM however.

Here's my guide I've written up for the game.
