Megaman 8

Producer: Capcom
System: Playstation, Saturn, GameCube, Playstation 2
Year: 1997

This is the last of the main series to come out, Megaman 8, also making the Blue Bomber’s official debut outside of a Nintendo System (Best of Megaman was made by US Gold, apparently not affiliated with Capcom).

As far as the story goes, a pair of highly unusual meteors come crashing to Earth, and Megaman heads out to investigate. As he does, he sees Dr. Wily fleeing the crash site with one of the meteors. The second meteor is actually a robot, called Duo. He warns Megaman that the other meteor contains a type of tremendous dark energy, which Wily is using to power his new series of Robot Masters. But this energy is highly dangerous and it’s up to Megaman to stop it before it eradicates the entire planet.

As this game is on a 32-bit platform, the graphics have been revamped yet again. But I’m not sure I like how they came out. Combined with the sound effects, the sprites seem to have a kind of ‘stretch and squish’ thing going on. Sprites seem quite stretchy and springy, and the sound effects make a squishy-sounding ‘plop’ when someone I moving around. Not very metallic sounding at all. Plus, there were lots of pastels, even in Wily’s fortress.

The biggest part that's ridiculed is the anime-style cut scenes that take place throughout the game. The drawing an animation are very nicely done; in fact, it puts the American TV series to shame. The probem comes from the really shoddy voice acting, which comes off as very cheap and badly done. Most of the voice actors didn't sound like they were trying very hard at all. Except Wily. I loved his voice; it sounded absolutely perfect.

The game was released on the 10th Anniversary of the original Megaman release, and was advertised to include a special anthology booklet. I bought a new copy quite a while ago, but there was no booklet to be found.:(
