| First start off with the out line of your drawing. This is usualy a black and white sketch. |  |

| Now fill in the area inside the lines with the basic colors. |  |

| Highlights are lighter than the basic colors. The tricky part of highlighting is knowing were the highlights go. Instead of blending the colors together in a gradient, catooon shading is croped off as a shape and filled in. The highlights depend on were the light is showing. look at yourself in a mirror with the light above your head and you will notice the highlights hit the top of each part of the head. The light will hit the top of the nose making it lighter and will not hit the bottom of the nose. In between the highlights and shades is the neutral or basic color. This lighter color can be acheived by either adding white over top of the basic color or by using a lighter hue of the basic color. |  |

| Areas opposite of were the light hits are darker then the basic color. This darker color can be acheived by either adding black over top of the basic color or by using a darker hue of the basic color. |  |
