Notes: Tale of two camps
Eckstein disappointed, Owens ecstatic

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Anaheim Angels would only occupy the Tempe Diablo Stadium clubhouse for a few more hours and already the place resembled a ghost town.

The air conditioning blew a little colder through a room once packed with bodies, and players took time to wax philosophical about their six-week journey of preparation for a title defense as they packed their bags.

David Eckstein wasn't exactly brimming with nostalgia, though, when asked how he felt his camp had gone.

"It was OK," he said. "It was fine."

The Angels' shortstop, leadoff man and resident perfectionist missed a week's worth of games because of a sore hip flexor and made three errors in the field.

Even though he hit .306, he still said Spring Training was a significantly less than successful personal experience in his mind.

"I was very disappointed in my camp," Eckstein said. "Being hurt and the way I played was not close to what I wanted. But the main thing was just getting our work in as a team, and from that end I guess it went pretty well overall."

Two lockers down, the newest Angel, Eric Owens, shared a different experience.

Owens, a reserve outfielder known for his grit and hustle, came from a 79-83 Florida Marlins team and fit right in. He said this Spring Training was unlike any other he's experienced -- for positive reasons.

"It's the best camp I've ever been involved with," Owens said. "This is a very special clubhouse, not just because they're the world champions. It's a place where everybody stands up for every other guy.

"Even though some guys are fighting for jobs, nobody is wanting another guy to do badly. I've seen that in other places, but not here. Everybody here is on the same page, which really helps."
