Who Shot Woody Guthrie?
For those of you who've been looking at my sites for the past couple of years, you might notice this one. The hills, and the two main characters were drawn some two years ago. That took forever to do, and I was quite frankly, tired of working on this project. (Tired of it? Or could I not figure out what to do with the empty space?) To signal the launching of my escape from artist's block, I completed this. The sun that appears to be around the head of the politician draws influence from my interest in these Dutch religious paintings tucked into a corner of the North Carolina Museum of Art (some of the very few paintings I enjoy from the main galleries of that museum). The red skies flowing from the sun are there to form a sort of confrontational blockade from the encroaching buildings. The blue skies flowing away and from far behind the buildings. When I first did this piece, I insisted that it had no meaning to it at all. But, with my new additions, I've figured a story for it...
The duck is a soldier protecting the peace of the quiet green fields of his king. In this kingdom, the ducks and other animals have tamed the wild businessmen, using them as transportation, workhorses, and even pets. This soldier duck, Bandito, is looking far beyond the sunset, and sees the buildings are preparing to come towards his lands.
Hmm, I think I'm going to make a series out of this little idea, expounding on the little story I've made here.
