Cavan

Cavan is a sparsely populated county in north central Ireland, immediately south of the border with Northern Ireland. The population is 53,965 (1986 est.), and it covers 1,891 sq km (730 sq mi). The town of Cavan is the county seat. The country is a hilly area with many lakes, some of which are linked to the River Erne. Dairy farming and hog raising are the principal economic activities, although some agriculture, mostly potato growing, takes place. Cavan became part of the province of Ulster early in the 17th century; it was subsequently colonized by English and Scottish settlers. In 1921, Cavan was one of three Ulster counties that became part of the Irish Free State.
