Clare

Clare is a county in western Ireland, between the Atlantic coast and the River Shannon estuary, in MUNSTER province. It covers 3,188 sq km (1,231 sq mi), and the population is 91,343 (1986). Ennis is the county town. The Burren, a flat limestone plateau with little vegetation, is in the north. Clare's hilly, lake-filled center gradually slopes down to fertile coastal plains, which are farmed. Coastal fishing is important, and lead, marble, and slate are mined. Vikings invaded Clare late in the 8th century. From the 11th to 17th century, the O'Brian clan controlled the county.
