Limerick (city)

Limerick, the seat of County Limerick in west central Ireland, is the Republic of Ireland's third largest city, with a population of 60,736 (1981). Situated on the estuary of the River Shannon, it is an industrial center and a seaport. The traditional craft of the city is lacemaking; other industries include flour milling, brewing, and dairy products. The city is divided into three sections--Newtown Pery, begun in 1769, and English and Irish towns. There are many 12th-century churches in and nearby Limerick. Limerick was settled by Norse invaders in 812. The city was chartered in 1197, and the fortress of King John, begun in 1210, still stands. Limerick was under siege by Oliver Cromwell in 1651 and by William III (William of Orange) in 1691.
