Monaghan

Monaghan is a county in the traditional province of Ulster in northeastern Ireland just south of the border with Northern Ireland. The county covers 1,290 sq km (498 sq mi) and has a population of 51,262 (1991). The town of Monaghan is the county seat. Monaghan is a region of low, undulating hills, and agriculture is the principal economic activity, with oats, hay, potatoes, flax, and livestock the major products. Light industry takes place in the urban centers. In AD 330, Monaghan became part of the kingdom of Oriel. From the 13th to the 16th century the powerful MacMahon family controlled Monaghan, but in 1589 control passed to the British crown.
