The case of the Ostrich and the
Giraffe
Everyone knows
that
A Giraffe
is not an animal that sticks its head in
the
sand.Everyone Knows that A Giraffe is
not a
bird!
Everyone Knows
that an ostrich is a bird
and
an ostrich sticks it head in the
sand
Everyone that is
except before The United States Court
of Military Review!
Some time in the
late 1960's in a argument before that
august body one Colonel
Drucker was in the middle of a
passionate argument
urging the Military Review Board not to
ignore the
very serious issue of command influence
before the
court for decision!
Colonel
Drucker stated with all the solemnity
and passion he could
muster:
"This court can not and
should not stick
its head in the sand like a
Giraffe."
The Courtroom
filled with spontaneous laughter!Colonel
Drucker
undaunted and unbowed by the laughter
continued
without hesitation:
"I know the difference
between a
Giraffe and whatever that bird is called
but this
court has buried its head so deeply in
the sand I thought a giraffe neck a more
meaningful
illustration than a birds
neck!"
