A Brief History of Sigma Alpha Iota
Sigma Alpha Iota was founded on June 12, 1903 at the University School of Music, Ann Arbor, Michigan. According to "A Brief History of Sigma Alpha Iota" in the PANPIPES of 1910, seven young women made a pledge to help each other with sisterly affection and to stand for the utmost music scholarship, uprightness of character, and the friendly unselfish relations among women in music.
The founders were seven upperclass and graduate students. They were:

Sigma Alpha Iota is an International Music Fraternity whose purposes are to foster interest in music and to promote contact among persons sharing an interest in music. Since 1923, Sigma Alpha Iota has been a member of the Professional Panhellenic Association. Sigma Alpha Iota also belongs to the Music Panhellenic Committee of the PPA. The Music Panhellenic Committee is composed of four Music Fraternities: Delta Omicron, Mu Phi Epsilon, Phi Mu Alpha, and Sigma Alpha Iota who meet annually to act upon all matters of mutual concern.
