Obelisk
A curious monument, the Obelisk of C. Cassius Philieus(Philiscus), rises barely outside Nicaea on the road to Nicomedia,Elbeyli town. The obelisk, triangular in section, is 12 m tall (original height was 15,5 meters, consist of 6 blocks of rocks ...but now 5 rocks were left), and is placed on a rectangular base 2 x 3 m. An inscription takes place on the base, which says "T.Casius, son of Asclepiodotus, has lived 83 years".This might be the obelisk of a family tomb.

Tomb

Another underground Tomb (Hypogea) was found in the region, not far from this obelisk.Dimension of the tomb was 3 x 4 m and made for two persons. As shown in below pictures there are wall paintings inside the tomb.
Many years ago, some of the inside paintings/ reliefs were being cut and stolen by international smugglers, and were illegally taken abroad.
Restorations and preservations are carried out by the experts and the tomb is now under the control of Iznik Archaeological Museum, covered with an iron cage.
