The Poor Man's Bowl
(Makes 2 servings)

Submitted by: Lady Hawk

  • Ingredients:

1 large loaf of hard crusted bread (I get Italian)
2 reg. size cans of BBQ beans w/onions
    Diced ham or bacon pieces

Cut the loaf of bread in half. Reach in and pull out the center of the bread but don't go too close to the crust. This makes your bowl. Break up the bread you pull out of the center and mix with the heated beans. Pour this into the bread bowl. It will soak into the bread bowl and flavor it. You eat it right out of the bread bowl and when the beans are gone, you then eat the bread bowl too.

    Note:
This is what many families who were "Coal Mine" workers families ate as they were very poor and had a hard time making ends meet. It is fun to have for a camping meal too or if you're just pinching pennies. I sometimes make it to remind my family to be ever so thankful for having plenty of food and make us appreciate having more than enough food. I have done this with salads, maccoroni & cheese and other items too. Kids just love these.
