Powers: The Anti-Monitor had godlike powers, had an infinite knowledge about the secrets of the multiverse, and could bestow powers on others. He could generate antimatter waves that obliterated matter, and in this way he could destroy entire universes. The Anti-Monitor could absorb matter destroyed by anti-matter, becoming ever more powerful in the process.History: Billions of years ago on the planet Oa, the scientist Krona probed the beginnings of the universe, despite the protests of his brethren. He perfected a machine that could see back in time, but once he reached the start of the universe he saw a gigantic hand coming into view, and cosmic feedback destroyed his machine. The feedback resulted in a multiverse being created at the beginning of time, including the Anti-Matter Universe. The Anti-Matter came into being on Qward, the Anti-Matter version of Oa, and sought knowledge of the universe. He was not satisfied with mere knowledge, and conquered Qward, founding the Thunderers of Qward, and extending his rule across the universe. He then decided to destroy the multiverse itself, but the Monitor, who was born on one of Oa's moons after the creation of the multiverse, appointed himself protector of the multiverse and vowed to keep it safe. The Monitor and Anti-Monitor waged war for a million years, and at the conclusion of their battle they found themselves deadlocked, but they did manage to knock each other unconscious. They stayed in this state for nine billion years.
Pariah accidentally revitalized the Anti-Monitor, and the Monitor awoke to oppose him.
The Monitor assembled Earth's heroes and formed a plan to save the multiverse from the Anti-Monitor. The Monitor died, but out of his essence was created a safe haven for Earth-1, Earth-2, Earth-4, Earth-S and Earth-X, the only parallel Earths in the multiverse that Anti-Monitor had not destroyed. These Earths combined, transforming the multiverse into a single universe. These events, the Crisis on Infinite Earths, rewrote history from the beginning of time, so that the multiverse never existed.
(Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1, Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Superman-Prime #1 (fb)) - With the rebirth of the multiverse following the Infinite Crisis, the Anti-Monitor was reborn as well, reconstructed by Cyborg Superman and the Manhunters. Sinestro formed his Sinestro Corps for the purpose of bending the chaos of the universe to his will using fear, and the Anti-Monitor served as guardian of the Corps. Sinestro planned on destroying Earth, and the Anti-Monitor knew that if he succeeded all of the 52 unicverses would collapse, and he would be sole ruler of the universe, the antimatter universe. Sinestro introduced his latest recruit, Superboy-Prime, to the Monitor. Superboy played along, but he was horrified that the Anti-Monitor, the being that had destroyed his Earth during the Crisis, was reborn. He planned to pretend to follow Sinestro until he had the opportunity to make the Ant0-Monitor bow to him.
(Green Lantern IV #22) - As the Simnestro Corps waged war against the Green lanterns Cyborg prepared the completion of new Warworld and informed the Anti-Monitor that they would soon find his new home. He reflected that the Guardians had no idea of his true motives, and waxed poetic about the pain of life, and his belief that all life was only fear and loss. The Anti-Monitor soothed him, and promised him that if he fulfilled his wishes he would kill him. The Cyborg-Superman shed tears in gratitude.
(Green Lantern Corps II #15, Green Lantern IV #23) - The Lost Lanterns searching for Ion in the catacombs of Qward were halted by the Anti-Monitor. The Anti-Monitor incinerated Lost Lantern Ke’Haan, but the remaining Lanterns fought hard against him, and managed to free Ion from his grasp and return Ion to Oa.
(Green Lantern IV #24, Green Lantern Corps II #17, Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Superman-Prime #1) - The Sinestro Corps invaded Earth, intending to make an example of the planet, and show that they could control any world through fear. The Corps wrecked havoc and battled Earth’s heroes, and paved the way for Anti-Monitor and his Warworld to land on the planet. The Anti-Monitor liked the looks of his new home, and knew that if he ruled Earth he could rule the entire 52 worlds of the multiverse. Once the Guardians of the Universe became aware of his plan, they imbued corpsman Sodam yat with the powers of Ion. Ion went after the Anti-Monitor, who already considered him an insignificant pest, but Sinestro sent Superman-Prime after the hero to protect his guardian.
(Green Lantern IV #25) - Sodam Yat survived Superman’s attack, and the Sinestro Corps War continued to rage across Earth. Hal and Kyle went to Coast Citry to protect it from Sinestro, and Hal issued a radio broadcast asking the residents to flee. Not a soul left, everyone had faith Hal would save them from Sinestro. Sinestro and a number of his soldiers engaged Hal and Kyle, and Sinestro told them he’d already won the war. His actions made the Guardians rewrite the Book of Oa, and nowe that the GLC could use lethal force they would be feared. Sinestro always wanted the GLC to be a more totalitarian police force to bring order to the universe, and he’d succeeded. Sinestro and Hal’s rings were both drained of power, and they squared off in hand-to-hand combat. Hal won, and told Sinestro he was under arrest. In NYC the Anti-Monitor tapped into Earth’s energy and prepared to unleash an anti-matter wave to consume Earth. The Guardians confronted him, and he burned one of them with anti-matter, infecting her with his darkness. The GLC ruptured the heart of Anti-Monitor’s Warworld, the Sinestro Corps central power battery, and created a shield around Warworld and the Monitor. The ensuing blast nearly destroyed the Anti-Monitor, but he rose from the explosion and boasted that he was alive. Superman-Prime told him to shut up and finished him off, betraying him for his destruction of Earth-Prime during the Crisis. With the Anti-Monitor destroyed, Sinestro vanquished, and having no way of recharging their rings the Sinestro Corps fled Earth to lick their wounds. The Anti-Monitor’s essence was discovered by Nekron, who transformed him into the central power battery of the Black Lantern Corps.
