Powers: Azrael wore the Suit of Sorrows, which increased his strength and speed, but slowly drove him mad and gave him a hubristic belief in his role as god’s avenger. He wielded the Sword of Sin, a flaming sword which could cleave through a target without leaving a mark, and conjured vision of a victim’s unrepented sins.

History: (Azrael: Death’s Dark Knight #1 (fb, BTS, 2 (fb, BTS)) - The Order of Purity selected worthies to wear the Suit of Sorrows, forged from the armor of dead Crusaders, and serve as Azrael, a knight that dealt out god’s vengeance. They chose Abraham Arlington, a British national, and ex-military, as their new Azrael.

(Batman and the Outsiders II #14) -

(Azrael: Death’s Dark Knight #1, 2) - After only six weeks of wearing the Suit f Sorrows Abraham was driven mad. He murdered undercover GCPD officer Jimmy Burrows. Burrows begged for mercy, and explained that he was only undercover as a gangster, but Azrael simply told him that he was god’s justice before decapitating him. The Order of Purity realized Abraham was expendable, and passed the suit onto their new recruit Michael Lane, who was blamed by the authorities for Abraham’s crime. They institutionalized Abraham to keep him from hurting himself or others. Michael Lane was being blamed by the GCPD for the murder Abraham committed, and demanded to see what had become of his predecessor, and the Order brought him to see Abraham in his cell. They claimed he went mad so soon because he was improperly trained by a rogue sect within the Order.
