AZTEK

Real Name: Uno

Class: Human technology / magic-user

Occupation: Champion

Group Affiliation: JLA, Q Society

Known Relatives: Emilio (father), Mrs. Rodman (mother), Lawrence Rodman (brother), unnamed nibling, unnamed sister-in-law

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Vanity City, Oregon

First Appearance: Aztek: The Ultimate Man #1 (August, 1996)

Powers: Aztek wore an occult battlesuit that could be recharged with spiritual rituals. It contained the memories and past experiences of all the suit's previous wearers, and granted Aztek superhuman strength, speed, durability, flight, and the ability to travel in space. The suit also gave him powers of enhanced vision, energy projection, and invisibility.

History(Aztek: The Ultimate Man #5 (fb BTS)) - The Q Society trained Emilio to be their latest champion against Tezcatlipoca. He fell in love with a woman, and had a child, which was forbidden for a champion to do, so the Society killed him, and raised the child, naming him Uno. As an adult Aztek was ready to serve as a champion for Quetzalcoatl.

(Aztek: The Ultimate Man #1) - After all his training Aztek began his first day of operation in Vanity City Oregon, where Tezcotlipoca was supposed to return. He tested out the Aztek suit, and was exhilarated, but dreaded becoming a normal member of society by following the Q Society's orders to find an identity, steady work, and a place to live. With no past and no money he couldn't find a place to stay, so he decided to go to the bank, they had money and surely they could tell him how to get some. The bank was held up by semi-retired supervillain Piper, who was quickly taken down and brutalized by the vigilante Bloodtype. He was about to gun down the helpless Piper when Aztek changed into his combat gear and asked him to stop. Bloodtype styled himself the protector of Vanity, and didn't want anyone horning in on his action, so he attacked Aztek. Aztek hated the idea of superhero battles causing property damage and injuring civilians, so he short-circuited Bloodtype's weaponry, disabling him. Bloodtype had managed to get a few shots in on Piper, who lay dying. As he passed he told Aztek he was forced to pull the bank job by thugs holding his daughter hostage, he was reformed, and in his civilian identity Curtis Falconer he was supposed to start his new job as doctor at St. Bartholomew's. The damage Bloodtype caused resulted in a huge explosion, resulting in numerous casulties. Aztek returned to his civilian garb, and was taken to St. Bart's with the other casualties. He used his powers to heal one of the wounded, and took the identity of Falconer, St. Bart's new doctor. With his new identity he got an apartment, and because the only "superhero" of Vanity was dead he decided to be a superior protector of Vanity.

(Aztek: The Ultimate Man #2) - "Curtis Falconer" started work at St. Bartholemew's, and nurse Joy Page was immediately attracted to him. She told him they had a date that night, over his objections that he had life-or-death matters to deal with after work. He still had to rescue Piper's daughter Mindy Falconer, but was interrupted by Green Lantern Kyle Rayner. Major Force was causing havoc in Vanity, and the police presumed Aztek was his accomplice. Aztek had no time for a fight based on a misunderstanding, so he stole GL's power ring and asked him to be friends. GL trusted him, and they found that Mindy was not only free, but partnered up with former hired goon Synth, who'd disguised himself as Major Force, and they were meeting with Vanity's crimebosses negotiating a takeover. Aztek defeated Synth, and told Mindy she should be ashamed of herself. Synth tried to shoot Aztek, but the battle had run past midnight, and every other day he became mentally deficient, so he forgot who he was aiming at and killed Mindy. Aztek was disappointed that she died on his watch, but GL told him not to be so hard on himself.

(Aztek: The Ultimate Man #3) - Aztek stopped a mugging, and the muggers said they wouldn't be robbing if they weren't so poor. He gave them all the money he had on him, even though it would mean walking to work for a while. One of the muggers sprayed him with mustard gas before fleeing, and the victim said Aztek's good nature didn't fit in in Vanity. In reality the victim was Fixit, an underworld inventor, who'd orchestrated the scene. The spray on Aztek had barium in it, and would make him trackable for 24 hours. Fixit's client was Death-Doll, the estranged wife of Bloodtype, who blamed Aztek for her husband's death and wanted blood. Curtis was late for his date with Joy, and broke to boot, but she didn't seem to mind. He was amazed by the sights and the sounds of the Texas-style theme restaurant they ate at. He said he was raised by warrior monks, and had never experienced such things. Joy said Curt was lucky she was into weird guys. The date soured when Death-Doll arrived to kill Curt. He changed into Aztek, and flew off with her so she wouldn't harm innocents. She got the advantage in their fight, and was ready to kill him when her hired goons, the same ones that staged the earlier mugging, hit her with a shovel because they decided Aztek was one of the only good people in Vanity, and she was insane. Death-Doll saw the tide was turning against her, so she teleported away from the battle, promising to kill Aztek later. Unfortunately for her, her teleport device was damaged in the fight against Aztek, and she teleported right into Bloodtype's tombstone. Her body fused into the tombstone, and she died.

(Aztek: The Ultimate Man #4, 5) - Aztek spent the day looking for Mrs. Reichle's missing pet lizard before discovering him at the old steel works. There was a heist on the rich side of town, but Aztek felt little kindnesses sometimes meant the most to him. He stopped by Reichle's apartment to find that she'd slit her wrists, despairing that Aztek would never find her pet. He rushed her to St. Bart's, and his boss Julia Frostick confronted him, her benefactor Forbes Cleveden knew Curt Falconer, and she knew he was an imposter. She gave him a day to either resign or explain himself. Two clunky robots burst into the hospital trying to kill Curt in the name of the Lizard King, and he was forced to change into Aztek and take the fight somewhere he could avoid casualties. He defeated them and found they were powered by humans who'd been drained of their life energies. He recognized the tech as that only known to the Q Society, and got a call from Lizard King, who had Joy hostage and demanded they battle. He was a former member of the Q Society who wanted to usurp Aztek's role as their champion. Aztek tracked Lizard King through the phone call, and the villain said he had a deathtrap waiting for him, a room where Joy was, rigged with explosions if Aztek entered with his helmet. Aztek took off his helmet, and blasted the King, who was unaware he could activate his suit manually, and Aztek found he'd been lied to, the "deathtrap" was an empty room. Lizard King told him the Q Society could no longer be trusted, and revealed that they killed Aztek's father, and without any other options raised him to be their champion. King put on Aztek's helmet, and promised to kill him quickly. King never passed the final initiation of the Society, so he couldn't keep the voices of past champions in the helmet silent, and his brain short-circuited. Aztek found the remains of Joy, who'd had all her life and goodness drained away. He swathed what remained of her in a blanket, and arrived at St. Barts, where he collapsed, unable to deal with the trauma.

(Green Lantern III #81) - Coast City; Aztek was among the heroes who attended a memorial service for Green Lantern Hal Jordan.

(Aztek: The Ultimate Man #6, 7) - In the ER Aztek revealed his identity to Frostick, but she'd already figured it out because he wasn't very canny when he changed into costume. Reports came in of civilians dying of Joker venom, and Aztek flew off to find the villain. Joker had robot crickets whose chirps induced madness, and he challenged Aztek to find all the robots he'd hidden around Vanity. Aztek destroyed the crickets, saved Cleveden from a breakdown, and dealt with the rush of patients in the ER. Joker was caught by VCPD, but said it was all part of his plan. Batman had followed his nemesis, and told Aztek he'd need his help dealing with the madman. Aztek and Batman busted up the shop of Fixit, who'd created the mechanical crickets for Joker. They bound him as well as supervillain Heatsnap, who was shopping at the time. Fixit said Joker's venom would mutate in an hour, and claimed he had no idea what Joker was planning. Heatsnap was formerly the villains Coldsnap and Heatroke, lovers who couldn't touch each other. They underwent an experimental procedure to fix this but ended up fused into a single body, and Aztek determined to raise money to help restore them to normal. The Joker venom mutated into an electronic version, flooding all of Vanity's media with a laughing Joker smile. Aztek located the venom canister high over the city, and used an anti-gravity generator to raise it into the stratosphere, where it was exploded. Batman was impressed with the newcomer. Aztek returned to St. Bart's and was talking to Frostick when his injuries finally caught up to him, and he collapsed.

(Aztek: The Ultimate Man #8, 9) - Aztek was in critical condition, so the Q Society arrievd to patch him up. Aztek woke up during surgery and shouted that the Society had killed his father. Knowing that his loyalties were now divided the Society had Aztek's second practice with the suit. The Society warned him that if he messed up again he'd be replaced, but they set him up with a new apartment provided by LexCorp. Frostick had been asked to let Aztek stay on as doctor, but she refused, knowing it was massively illegal, and fearing more superfights in her hospital. Aztek saw a news report on a hostage situation at the Vanity Wax Museum, where handicapped children on a LexCorp field trip were being held by the mercenaries Dial "V" for Villain. Aztek easily defeated the villains, and was greeted by an adoring press. He didn't know that the whole hostage situation was orchestrated by Lex Luthor so he could have a high profile victory, furthering Lex's relationship with the Q Society. Aztek had his suspicions about being welcomed back to St. Bart's with the identity of Curt Falconer entirely his now. He visited Joy in the special victim unit, but didn't have much help she'd ever heal. He told Frostick he wasn't sure he'd ever done any good as Aztek, and she showed him a boy in a coma who was Superman's number one fan, and asked if he could get the hero to visit him. Aztek flew to Metropolis, where Parasite was on a rampage. This was another event set up by Luthor and the Q Society, who wanted Aztek to enter the fold of the superhero community. Aztek made short work of Parasite, and asked Maggie Sawyer could get hold of Superman. The hero was nice enough to visit the boy in the coma, and Lex was pleased that Aztek had made good with three pivotal members of the JLA.

(JLA #5, Aztek: The Ultimate Man #10) - Aztek showed up for the JLA membership drive at the JLA Watchtower. GL ran him through a virtual scenario where Darkseid had killed the other JLA members, and GL liked his outside the box reaction to gather Earth's remaining superheros and team up with the rebel Hunger Dogs of Apokolips. GL thought he had a pretty good shot of making the JLA. A few weeks later Professor Ivo was brought to St. Barts, his formerly immortal body failing without the serum that kept him young. Curt told Frostick they should try to recreate the serum to save him, but she said there were too many super powered loons in Vanity already. Amazo, Ivo's android creation, came to Vanity to destroy his creator, and engaged in a pitched battle with Aztek. He gave up the fight after the JLA arrived, and Aztek was inducted into the JLA as their latest member. Aztek wondered if Frostick was supposed to be his romantic interest, but she turned him down, reminding him that life was not a movie, and she thought superheroes were irresponsible and dangerous.

(JLA #10) - Aztek was in the JLA Monitor Womb when he detected a massive amount of energy heading toward Earth, and Martian Manhunter chose to investigate it. He was devastated by the Genesis Wave and realized it was headed toward Earth.

(JLA #11, 12, 15) - The JLA tracked down the Injustice Gang, with Superman and Martian Manhunter traveling into space to find their satellite hq. The Gang them to a duplicate hq, and trapped them in a maze that was a manifestation of Joker s mind. Metron approached Flash, Aquaman and Aztek, telling them Lex Luthor had the Philosopher s Stone, and that Darkseid was after it. Aztek stayed in the Watchtower while the others went to find the Stone. Lex Luthor patched in a transmission to the Watchtower, revealing himself as the Q Foundation s benefactor. He didn t believe in a Shadow God, but he did want a hero he created on the JLA. The Gang teleported nuclear warheads aboard the Watchtower, and Luthor told Aztek he d start working for the Gang or die, but he defused the bombs. The JLA found the Gang s satellite hq thanks to Arrow, who d only pretended to betray the JLA, and Mirror Master, who was working for Batman, who d paid him more than Lex. The JLA defeated the Gang and blew up their satellite. Joker was got ahold of the Philosopher s Stone, and prepared to use it on the JLA, but Martian Manhunter temporarily turned him sane. Lex convinced Joker to use the Stone to undo the deaths the JLA Revenge Squad caused in Star City, ensuring that Lex couldn't be charged with any crime. Aztek quit the JLA because he found it a conflict of interest that Lex owned all the technology he used.

(JLA #27) - Aztek was called in as a JLA reservist to battle Amazo. Amazo was programmed to acquire the powers of the JLA, so when Aztek and a number of other heroes temporarily joined the JLA to battle him it just made Amazo more powerful. Amazo decimated the JLA reservists, and was only defeated when Superman officially disbanded the JLA, leaving Amazo powerless.

(JLA #36, 38, 39, 41) - With Mageddon approaching Earth Aztek was contacted by the JLA to help combat it. Aztek s helmet identified Mageddon with Tezcatlipoca, Aztec god of darkness, and warned him that his arrival signaled the twilight of humanity and the threat Aztek had been trained his whole life for. Aztek saw Mageddon s face and traveled inside its mind and it drove him blind, but he still made his way to the JLA Embassy to offer his help. The JLA built an anti-war ray, a device that gave all of humanity the ability to resist Mageddon s urgings for them to destroy each other, as well as temporary superpowers so that they could all help fight Mageddon. Aztek fulfilled his purpose by sacrificing himself to unleash a 4-D explosion that injured Mageddon, and the final blow was delivered when Superman absorbed the anti-sun that powered Mageddon.
