History: (Sandman Mystery Theatre #28) - The Butcher came from the country and set up a den in NYC's sewer system, brining along the tools of his trade, a rag doll and the mummified hand of his mother. He preyed on derelicts and other unfortunates of the Great Depression, brutally slaughtering them and hanging them up like meat in his abattoir. Lieutenant Burke and two officers had been investigating the Butcher murders, which were finally noticed after years of his work, and when evidence began coming up through toilets Burke knew he was in the subway. The Butcher decapitated one of the officers, and the Sandman arrived, but Burke started shooting at him instead of the Butcher. The Butcher briefly retreated to his lair to stroke his mother's hand, upset at being hurt, before attacking Burke and Sandman again in a near-mindless rage. After suffering several injuries he was shot in the head by Burke as he attempted to kill the Sandman.
