(Star-Spangled Comics I #112) - Compass decided to disprove old seafaring superstitions, so he set sail on a Friday the 13th, brought along a black cat and went against a number of other traditions. There were many near-accidents on the ship, and Compass discovered that the cause was not defying the fates, but a criminal on board named Bryson.

(Star-Spangled Comics I #116) - Compass followed the career of Paul Rhone, the Painter of Doom, who had the misfortune to be on several ships that sank. Compass accompanied Rhone on a trip to San Juan and discovered that the painter had a split-personality that sabotaged all the ships he was on. Compass told the painter what he had done, and Paul committed suicide shortly thereafter.
