History: (Welcome to Tranquility #1) - Colette Pearson approached Tommy Lindo, the sheriff of Tranquility, a retirement community for the superheroes of yesteryear, saying she was interested in doing a story on her small town. Sheriff Lindo was reluctant at first, but agreed to show Colette around town. While driving through Main St. Former child aviator Minxy Minerva, suffered from a bout of dementia, crashed her jet, thinking she was pursuing her old enemy the Sky Pirate. Lindo rescued Minxy from the wreckage and checked on her sister, Seresa, who Minxy had hired as an assistant. Seresa said she simply couldn’t turn down $20,000 a week, no matter how dangerous the work was. Lindo wasn’t happy that the first thing Colette saw in Tranquility was a near tragedy, and was disappointed when Colette refused to keep from airing the footage in the future. Lindo said she cared about her community, and she didn’t want Colette’s piece to put them in a bad light. Sheriff Lindo met with Mayor Fury, asking for him to find a way to ground Minxy permanently. He reminded her that Minxy had friends in high places because of her service during WWII, and was a millionaire to boot, so he just wanted to look the other way. Lindo and Colette went to grab a bite at Chick’n Go and Lindo introduced Colette to Colonel Cragg, Bad Dog, and Mr. Articulate, who immediately started laying his charms on Colette. Cragg grumbled that Articulate’s ladies-man act was phony and made some homophobic comments about him. Lindo said she knew Mr. Articulate was straight because she’d slept with him, surprising Cragg and Dog. Emoticon, grandson of maxi-villain the Typist came into town with his entourage looking to stir up trouble. Lindo told him to leave Chick’n Go and he said he was harassing her. Their argument escalated and Emoticon punched her, setting off a fight with Lindo, Colonel Cragg, Bad Dog and Mr. Articulate. During the scuffle Mr. Articulate was stabbed with his own sword and died in Sheriff Lindo’s arms. He remarked that at least he had a beautiful woman to gaze at before his life slipped away. Lindo said no one was leaving until they were cleared by her deputies and asked Cederic, Colette’s cameraman, to turn over the tape he’d been filming.
(Welcome to Tranquility #2) - Bug, a reporter from the rag Tattler snuck into the coroner’s office and took pictures of Mr. Articulate’s corpse, but Dr. Rachel Steel ended up kicking him out. Colette was upset that, as a material witness, Lindo was keeping her away from the medical examiner Steel’s examination of Mr. Articulate. Deputy Presley Duray told her she needed to back off, and she recognized him as the former sheriff who lost his job because a suspect died in his custody. Duray made it clear he was completely loyal to Lindo, who made sure he still had a place in law enforcement, and crossing Lindo wouldn’t be in her best interests. Lindo took Emoticon into custody, and said she was convinced he was the murderer. Emoticon said he liked Mr,. Articulate and his old stories, and when Lindo reminded him that Articulate put his grandfather the Typist behind bars, Emoticon replied that everyone put his grandfather in jail. Emoticon went on to say he hated his grandfather, noting that he and Lindo had a lot in common since her grandfather, the Black Glider, ran out on her family and she hated him. Lindo got flustered, and Emoticon said she had to believe he was innocent because his emoticon visor wouldn’t let him lie, and he was displaying a smiling emoticon. Sheriff Lindo went to Astral Man’s memorial statue and broke down in tears. Seresa comforted her, saying she couldn’t believe she was witnessing her sister display emotion and asked if the rumors were true that she’d slept with Mr. Articulate. Tommy said that after her accident he was there for completely, and she had a moment of needing him intimately. Rachel finished her examination and Lindo gave Colette an exclusive to keep other media vultures away. Dr. Steel revealed that Mr. Articulate had late-stage cancer, only having months to live, and wondered why he’d kept his illness secret from his friends. Mayor Fury, Colonel Cragg and Bad Dog met Zombie Zeke to arrange Articulate’s funeral. They were in no mood for Zombie Zeke’s puns or shtick and just wanted him to assure them they’d give an honorable funeral for their their friend. They went to the Fox Hole bar to drink away their sorrow, and while they all agreed they couldn’t think of anyone who’d want Articulate dead, Bad Dog admitted that smart people made him angry and he broke his beer glass in his hand. Cosmos wanted to commiserate with them, and Cragg wanted to start a fight with him, calling him a traitor, but Mayor Fury made him back off. The Sampson Twins showed up, mocking Articulate and making homophobic comments. Fury and his friends got in a bar brawl with the twins, handling them easily. Sheriff Lindo showed up to arrest the twins, and Fury apologized for behaving so badly, but Lindo hugged him, saying he was standing up for his friend. The entire town turned out for Articulate’s funeral.
