First Appearance: Brave and the Bold I #78 (June-July, 1968)

Powers: Copperhead was a master contortionist and incredibly agile. He was a patient and studious man, and a relentless adversary. He originally wore a suit that allowed him to absorb high impacts without effect, and squeeze through small spaces. The suit was covered with an oily substance that made him slippery, an opponent would have a difficult time holding on to him in combat. The suit was equipped with a tail that could coil around an opponent and fangs coated with toxins. After selling his soul to Neron his body was transformed into a snakelike form that possessed all the powers of the costume he previously wore.

History: (Brave and the Bold vol. 1 #78)-Copperhead was a common thief with uncommon talents living in Gotham City. He was apprehended by Batman II and Batgirl after committing a number of thefts of rare gems and artifacts. In jail he mastered his contortionist abilities and discovered how much he enjoyed solitude. Copperhead began identifying himself more and more with his costume, he rejected humanity, envisioning himself as nothing more than a cold-blooded snake.

(Secret Society of Super-Villains #1, 3, 6-8)The Secret Society of Super-Villains helped Copperhead escape prison, and made him a member of their group. He would serve on and off with the team until its' dissolution.

(Hawk and Dove III #8, 9) - Ren Takamori was out taking photographs, and snapped a picture of Copperhead committing a murder. Copperhead saw her, and she was in fear that he'd track her down, which he did. Her friends hawk and Dove, along with Rue Spencer the aunt of her friend Kyle fought the assassin and gave her a chance to run. He found her again, but Hawk and Dove defeated him. Washington S.C.U. hoped that Ren's photos, the first solid evidence of Copperhead's murderous activity, would keep him in jail.

He made a deal with Neron, selling his soul in exchange for being transformed into a serpentine creature.

(Damage #18) - Copperhead went on a killing spree at Miami International Airport when Damage confronted him. Their battle in a control tower released a chemical fire extinguisher, and the cold forced Copperhead to flee. Damage pursued him, annoying Copperhead enough to try to kill him without being paid for it. He beat on Damage until he lost control of his powers. Damage ran as far as he could so no one would be hurt when he exploded.

(Starman II #31, 32) - Dr. Pip brought Copperhead to Opal City and hired him as a bodyguard. While he had time to kill, Copperhead indulged himself in furthering his collection of transistor radios. Before long Copperhead had to prevent Starman VII from interfering in Dr. Pip's plans. Copperhead defeated the young hero and tied him up in Randall's Department Store, where Pip had a bomb set. The Black Pirate intervened to rescue Starman, and Copperhead slunk off to avoid capture.

(Chase #2, 3) - While in prison Copperhead was recruited by Amanda Waller for the Suicide Squad. The Squad was supposed to accompany D.E.O. agent Chase to Peru and destroy the remains of the Construct’s Temple. Before reaching the Temple Copperhead’s teammate Bolt created a jammer to prevent Waller from observing the Squad’s actions, and Copperhead pushed Chase off a cliff. The Squad then met up with Copperhead’s friend Sergei Yurskelyov and were flown off to Russia.

(Hawkman IV #1-4) - Kristopher Renard Roderic hired Tigress, Copperhead and Shadow Thief to go to India and steal the Third Eye of Shiva from archaeologist Danny Evans. They'd worked for him before to steal artifacts from the Vatican, but that job had gone south. When Danny uncovered the underground temple they made their move, and Copperhead was ready to eat the archaeologist, but his friends Hawkman and Hawkgirl arrived on the scene. They clashed, and the battle went in the Hawks favor. Roderic had the local military in his pocket, and they phoned him to tell him the Hawks had almost reached the Eye, so he ordered a missile strike, caring little for the survival of his hired muscle. The Hawks and their foes survived, but the temple was blasted open, and the Eye opened up a dimensional portal to the Battlelands, home of Shiva's children, taking Hawkman, Shadow Thief and Copperhead into the other dimension. On Earth Tigress pried the Eye loose from the statue of Shiva it was attached to and fled. In the Battlelands Hawkman and company were attacked by the elephantine Komeriah, sons of Ganesha, who mistook them for their mortal enemy the humanoid Makhnir, the other sons of their god. Hawkman forced them to flee, and they were taken in by the Makhnir. Copperhead was starving, so he cornered one of the Makhnir, crushed him to death, and ate him. Shadow Thief and hawkman came upon him sleeping off his meal, and Hawkman was disgusted, but Shadow Thief admitted he'd gotten used to Copperhead's bestial nature, and pointed out that he was a good partner. Hawkman learned that they kept captive Komeriah in their diamond mines as slaves, and wanted to free them. Shadow Thief told him it wasn't his fight, but Hawkman replied that he'd fight inustie wherever he found it. He was knocked unconscious and chained by Fahir, leader of the Makhir. The only reason his people took Hawkman in was because they hoped he'd share his secret of flight to help them against the Komeriah, but since he'd proved he was not an ally they put him to work as a slave. Hawkman helped the Koeriah rebel, and Hawkgirl recovered the Eye and reopened the portal. Once Shadow Thief and Copperhead were back on Earth they fled the Hawks, and reported back to Roderic.
