History: <250,000 years ago> The scientist Bertron ran a series of experiments on the planet Krypton, creating a clone and leaving it to fend for itself in Krypton's harsh environment. Each time a clone died he saved its' genetic material, re-cloned it and once again set it out to die on Kryptonian soil. Eventually a being was created that could survive on Krypton. This clone killed Bertron and went on an interstellar rampage. Doomsday, as the clone came to be called, was defeated by the Green Lantern Corps and imprisoned inside a containment suit and capsule.
Doomsday's capsule crashed to Earth and after thousands of years Doomsday freed himself. He went on a spree of destruction across America and badly injured members of Justice League of America. Superman intervened and after a length battle Superman and Doomsday apparently beat each other to death. Superman eventually returned from the dead, as did Doomsday.
(Adventures of Superman #594) -President Luthor sent the Suicide Squad to the JLA Watchtower on the moon, and with JLAer Steel's help they used JLA teleportation technology to free Doomsday. Doomsday fatally injured Steel and decimated the entire Squad except for Black, who manipulated Doomsday's mind to replace his hatred of Superman with a hatred for Imperiex. Superman, with great misgivings and under orders from Luthor, teamed with Doomsday to destroy a number of Imperiex Probes in space. Imperiex Prime disintegrated Doomsday with an energy blast, leaving behind only a skeleton.
(Superman / Batman #10) - Darkseid had Dr. Bedlam clone Doomsday as a series of lesser powered animates. Darkseid sent the Doomsday army to Paradise Island to kidnap Kara Zor-El. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Amazons fought them off and destroyed them despite heavy casualties on their side, but they managed to bring Kara to Apokolips.
(Villains United: Infinite Crisis Special #1) - The Society released Doomsday from his prison in the center of the Earth. Doomsday and the Society massed in Metropolis, where they were confronted by virtually every hero on Earth. Doomsday was there largely for symbolic value; the heroes couldn't help but remember that he was the monster who'd killed Superman. The heroes and villains engaged in an epic battle.
