History: (Doctor Mid-Nite #1 (fb, BTS)) - Sogndal, Norway; The pregnant wife of noted surgeon Theodoric Cross was attacked by vagrants but saved by Dr. Mid-Nite. She went into labor, and Mid-Nite delivered the baby boy, whom she named Pieter. Pieter grew up to be a brilliant doctor, graduating Harvard at age 19, and later immigrated to America and worked under Dr. Charles McNider (Dr. Mid-Nite).
(JSA #60 (fb, BTS)) - Pieter’s mother joined him on seminar in Brazil and contracted chagas. The disease ravaged her body by the time Pieter operated on her, and she was the first patient he lost. A week after her funeral Pieter learned his mother’s drugs had been diluted, if not for corporate greed she could have lived another year.
(Doctor Mid-Nite #1) - Cross became an expert in physics, robotics, and infra red astronomy, and often became consumed by his work. After an insurance fraud scandal he lost his residency and vanished from the public eye. He reappeared in the crime-ridden Portsmouth as a "Midnight Doctor," helping those that couldn't afford health care. Cross retained his rich, ostentatious style, with a highend car and a seaside mansion. He made connections with Auntie Scum, the head of a mission, who he gave materials for a clean needle program, as well as providing prophylactics to local prostitutes. Several like minded people joined his cause, local toughs Ice Sickle and Nite-Lite as well as former lawyer Mouthpiece. He started investigating the A39 steroid, an accidental derivative of the Venom serum, used to treat genetic defects, but with bad side effects. The drug was pedaled by local criminals, and he met Camilla Marlowe, who was taking the drug for her aversion to light. He cultivated a doctor-patient relationship with her and sought her help in locating the manufacturers of A39. They met at a nightclub while Cross was dealing with Prof. Atticus Searles. Cross was funding and helping the Prof. in his quest to make oil more inert, thus reducing the hazards of oil spills. Atticus was abducted after the meeting, and Cross, Ice Sickle and Marlowe followed his abductors. Mr. Largo Sham made off with the Prof., but Cross and Nite-Lite caught his associates, two A39 addicts. The Terrible Trio were behind the steroids, and were sick of Cross interfering with their work, so they had one of their henchwomen drug Cross' drink with A39 while he visited a bar. Cross drove home, and was engaged in a car crash that left him conventionally blind,. He was treated at Emmanuel Hospital, and because drugs were found in his system his medical license was revoked. Depressed, Cross cut off all social ties, including his social work, but Marlowe was determined to snap him out of it. Once he took off his bandages he realized he could see into infrared, having full sight at night. He was inspired, creating goggles that focused visible light into the infrared so he could see at all times, creating blackout bombs and taming an owl as his companion. He invited Marlowe over and revealed that he intended to continue his work at saving society, but as the costumed crimefighter Dr. Mid-Nite, taking his inspiration and moniker from the blind mysteryman that operated during the 1940s, the same man that had delivered him.
(Doctor Mid-Nite #2, 3) - Mid-Nite started up his medical practice across the city again, and began work stopping crime. He got the drop on the goons that kidnapped Searles after they were released from prison, and learned of their connection to the Trio and Praeda Industries. Ice Sickle tracked down Largo Sham, and put Mid-Nite on his tracks. Mid-Nite followed him into an abandoned Burger Boy that functioned as a massive training center for A39 Praeda soldiers. After battling and being injured by one of the soldiers he was forced to flee, but unfortunately Sham saw him, and knew the Trio had a new meddler. He followed Mid-Nite back to his mansion, and was quickly restrained and interrogated with a truth serum. While Mid-Nite and Marlowe were researching Praeda, Sham broke a false tooth containing A39, broke his bonds, and escaped. Following the clues, Mid-Nite learned that Praeda was buying up the poor sections of Portsmouth and making them worse by getting rid of housing and flooding the areas with drugs. For more info he talked his way into Praeda and installed a modem transmitter in their mainframe. Sham brought him to the Trio, who tied him up and intended to sacrifice him to the spirits of earth, water and air. They left him to die, the room he was in being pumped full of poisonous gas. He managed to escape using a lockpick, and was picked up outside Praeda by Nite-Lite. The transmitter revealed Praeda's connection to Chemitron, a waste management facility where Mid-Nite suspected Praeda was manufacturing A39. Marlowe and Mid-Nite snuck in, and found the company collecting and distilling toxic waste. The Trio's goons caught them, shot Mid-Nite, and locked them in a room. Mid-Nite escaped, and broke into Praeda to confront the Terrible Trio. They gloated about the near fruition of their plans, releasing toxic waste into Portsmouth sewer lines, sharks into the bay, and causing a massive oil spill so their property would be the only land worth having in Portsmouth. The Trio tried to flee but Mid-Nite's man Lemon brought along hundreds of homeless to confront them about what they were planning for the city. They managed to escape, but Mid-Nite alerted federal authorities, and utilized his growing street crew to foil all their plans. Mid-Nite tackled the oil rig with Marlowe, and when she asked him why he took an interest in her, he replied that he always felt alone in darkness, and sensed a kindred spirit in her. The Trio were completely indignant that their plans were ruined, and hid out in a remote light house waiting to escape Portsmouth. Mid-Nite arrived, and in a panic the Trio fatally shot Sham. Mid-Nite easily defeated them, and they surrendered, cowering in fear, realising their predator days were over. The FDA and private philanthropists restored Portsmouth, and Mid-Nite became a local fixture, with a web site for reporting crimes and answering medical questions, while Marlowe serialized his adventures on her own web site.
(JSA #61 (fb, BTS)) - After encounters with the Seeing Plague and Chemo ravaging Portsmouth, Mid-Nite decided to update his medical center. He purchased an atomic force microscope, parallel reactor, and a number of chemicals from Tylerco.
Mid-Nite joined the JSA.
(Young Justice: Sins of Youth #1) - At Star-Spangled Kid’s insistence Mid-Nite and the JSA attended Young Justice’s Justice for All rally in Washington, as did Old Justice, the Titans and JLA. It was interrupted by Klarion, who magically de-aged Mid-Nite and most of the heroes into children. Doiby Dickles pulled out an extraterrestrial aging gun to return the heroes to their proper age, but another of Klarion’s spells intercepted his shot. The result was that the younger heroes present were aged to adulthood, but the other heroes remained children.
(Sins of Youth Secret Files #1, Sins of Youth: JLA, Jr. #1) - The de-aged Mid-Nite and JSA had a dispute with the de-aged JLA that resulted in them brawling for hours. Once they made up the JSA and Doiby Dickles went aboard the Steel Eagle so they could travel to Myrg so Doiby could find another aging gun to reverse Klarion's spell.
(Sins of Youth: Starwoman and the JSA (Junior Society) #1) - Mid-Nite, Doiby and the JSA battled Prince Marieb on Myrg, retrieved an aging gun, and returned to Earth.
(Young Justice: Sins of Youth #2) - Doiby tried using his new raygun on Mid-Nite and the other heroes affected by Klarion’s spell but it had no effect. Since the heroes’ ages were skewed by a combination of magic and science, they would need Klarion’s cooperation to undo the transformation. The heroes attacked Agenda’s headquarters in Alaska, where Superboy, Superman, Wonder Girl and Wonder Woman were being held hostage. The hq was defended by the Junior Injustice Society, but the heroes prevailed, forced the Agenda to flee, and freed the prisoners. They then forced Klarion to team with Doiby and return everyone to their proper age.
(JSA #13) - Aboard Hourman III’s timeship Metron explained to Mid-Nite and the JSA that Extant used stole Metron’s Moebius Chair to travel to the end of creation and create a new universe of his own making. Unless the JSA stopped him, Extant’s new universe would go backwards through time and erase the current universe.
(JSA #21) - Dr. Mid-Nite and Black Canary went on a date at Coney Island and discussed where their relationship was going.
(JSA #25) - Mid-Nite and the JSA welcomed the recently resurrected Hawkman I aboard as their newest member.
(JSA: Our Worlds at War #1) - During the Imperiex War Mid-Nite, the JSA and the JSA reserves were given a mission by President Luthor to disrupt Imperiex’s link to his ship’s power supply. The JSA not only cut off Imperiex from his power, but they managed to blow up his ship as well.
(JSA #26) - Mid-Nite and Mr. Terrific II examined a woman under a sleeping spell that their JSA teammate Dr. Fate believed to be his wife Lyta. They had no idea how to treat her, so Fate screamed at them and made an exit to search for his own solution. Mid-Nite and Terrific did a physical on Sentinel and discovered his body was now composed entirely of green flame.
(JSA #27) - Mid-Nite got caught up in a battle between Atom-Smasher and probationary JSA member Black Adam. Captain Marvel arrived at JSA hq and physically restrained Black Adam and calmed him down. Because of a dispute between current JSA chairman Sand and Hawkman, the JSA elected Mr. Terrific as their new JSA chairman, and immediately afterwards Mid-Nite and most of the JSA were teleported by Roulette to her House.
(JSA #28, 30) - Roulette forced Mid-Nite and his JSA teammates to battle each other for the amusement of a crowd of supervillains. Mid-Nite and Mr. Terrific were strapped into chairs and pitted against each other in a game of chess, with Roulette promising death to the loser. Mid-Nite and Terrific intentionally played to a draw, then escaped. The JSA wrecked Roulette’s House, so she teleported them back to JSA hq with a promise that they would play in her games again.
(JSA #31) - Mid-Nite and the JSA investigated the death of supervillain Shakedown. Batman joined them, letting them know Shakedown and his partner New Wave had kidnapped Jessica Weintraub, the infant daughter of a recently bankrupt Gotham computer whiz. When the villains realized they weren’t going to get paid their ransom they turned on each other. Batman and the JSA saved Jessica and captured New Wave. Black Canary left the JSA and told Mid-Nite she needed to break off their relationship because an old flame had reentered her life.
(JSA #32) - Mid-Nite gave new JSAer Power Girl a full physical and determined that her powers were not magic-based as she previously believed. Mid-Nite and the JSA welcomed Johnny Thunder, who claimed to have had a miraculous recovery from Alzheimer’s. In truth it was the Ultra-Humanite in possession of Thunder’s body.
(JSA #34-37) - The Ultra-Humanite used Johnny Thunder’s Thunderbolt to conquer the world, and imprisoned Mid-Nite and virtually every superhuman on Earth in stasis tubes, only reviving them when he needed mind-controlled slaves to serve in his personal guard the Thunderfront. Mid-Nite served as a member of the Thunderfront when they attacked the JSA, the only heroes not under the Humanite’s control. The JSA used a device that disrupted the braincaps Humanite used to control the Thunderfront, freeing them from Humanite’s mental domination. Mid-Nite and the JSA later defeated the Humanite, and afterwards attended the funeral of Johnny Thunder, whose body gave out after he was freed from the Humanite’s control.
(JSA #38) - Mid-Nite set up his connection to the JSA satellite com system, and greeted Power Girl, who’d set up the system.
(JSA #40) - The Shadower, delusional in his advanced age, thought that the current Dr. Mid-Nite was the same man as his arch-enemy McNider. He coerced his grandson, the new Shadower into holding Kenton Elementary School hostage, and threatening to execute the children unless Dr. Mid-Nite saved the life of the original Shadower. The Shadower needed a pancreatic coduodenectomy, perhaps the world’s most difficult surgery, and Mr. Terrific aided Mid-Nite in performing it. They did the best they could, but it was a risky surgery and Kevork died, but Captain Marvel and Star-Spangled Kid freed the hostages.
(JLA / JSA: Virtue and Vice) - Mid-Nite attended to the JLA and JSA members injured when members of their own ranks had been possessed by the Seven Deadly Sins and started a battle between the teams. Mid-Nite and the unpossessed members of the JLA and JSA helped Shazam re-chain Deadly Sins in the Rock of Eternity, and then defeated the Sins’ masters, Johnny Sorrow and Despero.
(JSA #44, 45) - Mid-Nite and Dr. Fate discovered that Mid-Nite’s patient “Lyta Hall” was actually Dove (Dawn Granger). Mordru had placed a spell of concealment on her, but Fate removed the illusion with the magical skull of Lord Wrynn. Fate had a hard time accepting the news, and abruptly left.
(JSA #46, 47, 49, 50) - Dove explained to Mid-Nite that Dr. Fate’s physical body was actually her and Hawk’s offspring, a being with the combined powers of the Lords of Order and Chaos, and Mordru sought to possess Fate’s body. Mordru’s ally Eclipso crashed JSA hq and beat Mid-Nite and Dove unconscious. Flash arrived and sped Mid-Nite to his lab in Portsmouth. He also dropped off Mr. Terrific and J.J. Thunder, who’d been badly injured in a fight with Mordru, and needed Mid-Nite’s immediate attention. After a lengthy surgery Mid-Nite patched up J.J., enabling J.J. to return to action and aiding the JSA in defeating Mordru.
(JSA #52) - Mid-Nite and Mr. Terrific called in Cave Carson to see if Sand was still alive after merging his body with the Earth. Carson discovered that there were a series of pulses eminating from Earth’s tectonic plates that sent a Morse code pattern spelling of J-S-A. He took this as evidence that Sand was alive and promised to investigate further.
(JSA #53) - Mid-Nite advised Mr. Terrific against testing the hydraulic harness supporting his broken leg in combat. Terrific was determined to resume his superhero career, but told Mid-Nite he admired his passion for healing the sick. Mid-Nite treated Power Girl, who’d been repeatedly shot by Crimson Avenger’s mystic bullets. She told Mid-Nite her near-death experience made her realize she didn’t have much of a life outside of the JSA, and Mid-Nite told her he knew exactly how she felt.
(JSA #54) - Mid-Nite, the JSA and JLA celebrated Thanksgiving at JSA hq. Mid-Nite volunteered for monitor duty to avoid his ex-girlfriend Black Canary, but she insisted on talking to him. She only irritated him by telling him there was never much to their relationship, and Mid-Nite admitted that as brilliant as he was with medicine he was hopeless making relationships work. Kulak and the Warlord of Ys ruined the Thanksgiving meal, but were quickly defeated by the heroes. The JLA and JSA settled for ordering out, and had pizza for Thanksgiving.
(JSA #55) - Mid-Nite welcomed the new JSA Museum curator Ma Hunkle, who brewed him some chicken noodle soup for his cold.
(Hawkman IV #23)- Mid-Nite and the JSA traveled to St. Roch to attend a party for Hawkman, but first took in the sights of the city. Mid-Nite met a prostitute named Rebecca, and offered to help her get on her own two feet. He gave her contact information for Nite-Lite and told her she could stay in one of his communes in Portsmouth. Hawkman’s party ended when theJSA heard a news report about Black Adam’sconquest of Kahndaq.
(JSA #57, Hawkman IV #24, JSA #58, HawkmanIV #25)- Mid-Nite and the JSA traveled to Kahndaq in the Steel Eagle with the intentionof taking the members of Black Adam’s superteam, their former allies, back home before Adam completely turned them into villains. Black Adam destroyed the Steel Eagle, and the team was scattered across Kahndaq. Atom-Smasher captured Mid-Nite and Mr. Terrific, and at Black Adam’s order he threw them to a crowd of angry Kahndaqis, who considered the JSA invaders. Mid-Nite and Terrific escaped, and met up with the rest of the JSA. Mid-Nite contacted Atom II, who was in Brainwave’s head, to guide him through psychosurgery that would hopefully cure Brainwave of his madness and deprive him of his powers. Before Atom could star, Mid-Nite and the rest of the JSA were defeated by Brainwave and Black Adam. Mid-Nite and the JSA fought Black Adam to a standstill. Atom-Smasher and Captain Marvel brokered a peace pact between Black Adam and the JSA. The JSA promised not to interfere further in Kahndaq as long as Black Adam and his team remained within the country’s orders and didn’t try conquering any surrounding nations.
(JSA #59) - Mid-Nite defeated the Crime Doctor, who was kidnapping homeless people in Portsmouth and harvesting their organs. Mid-Nite sent the surviving homeless to his clinics for treatment. The time-traveling Per Degaton appeared to Mid-Nite and told him he must feel good about setting up a worldwide network of clinics and communes for giving medical treatment to those who couldn't afford it. Per Degaton hinted that one of Mid-Nite’s protégés would come to a bad end in the near future before he returned to the timestream.
(JSA #60-62) - K-Mark was gunned down, and Mid-Nite operated on him, but failed to save his life. Mid-Nite’s assistant Ice Sickle was soon after shot and killed. Mid-Nite and the JSA vowed to find the killer, and Mid-Nite took time to pray in church. Mid-Nite and Terrific discussed theology, Mid-Nite being a devout believer while Terrific was an atheist. Spectre burst into the church, followed by the Spirit King. The Spirit King’d raised an army of the damned to destroy the JSA, including Louis Snipe, the dead man who’d killed Mid-Nite's assistants. Mid-Nite and the JSA fought the army of the dead, but knew it was the Spectre who had to return them to Hell. The Spectre banished the undead and destroyed the Spirit King.
(JSA #63, 64) - Mid-Nite monitored the sleeping forms of the JSA members who’d traveled to the Dreaming to retrieve Sand’s astral self. Sand’s astral self was reunited with his body, and the JSA threw a party to celebrate.
(JSA #65, 66) - Mid-Nite and the JSA defeated Solomon Grundy, who was running amok in Central Park. Hourman III appeared to the JSA, and brought Flash, Dr. Mid-Nite, Mr. Terrific and Hourman I to Time-Point to save the life of Hourman II. Dr. Mid-Nite performed emergency surgery on the grievously wounded Hourman II, but in the process Hourman I’s allotted hour at Time-Point ran out. A door to the past opened, and he prepared to go back in time, but his son refused to let him. Hourman II jumped into the past, intending to be the one Extant killed. Hourman III stopped him, set up a holographic field, and took Hourman I’s place as the one murdered by Extant. The JSA returned home with the remaining Hourmen.
(Identity Crisis #1) - Mid-Nite was among the number of heroes who attended Sue Dibny’s funeral. Afterwards heroes broke into teams to look for suspects in Sue’s murder, and Mid-Nate and the JSA went looking for Dr. Phosphorus.
(Identity Crisis #2, 5-7, JSA #67) - Mid-Nite and Mr. Terrific performed the autopsy on Sue Dibny’s body. Mid-Nite learned that Sue Dibny’s burns were not the cause of her death, and called Oracle to tell her Dr. Light didn’t kill Sue. He found miniature footprints in Sue’s brain, and learned that she died from lack of blood supply to her brain. It was Jean Loring, using her ex-husband Atom’s technology, who killed Sue.
(JSA #68) - Rip Hunter gathered Mid-Nite and the JSA and brought them in his Time Sphere to the year 1951. Per Degaton was going to do something on October 30, 1951 and blame it on the disbanded Justice Society, thus altering history. As a result they would be tried for treason and the JSA would never again reform. Rip Hunter had brought the JSA to convince the Justice Society to get back together to oppose Degaton.
(JSA #69-72) - <October 28-30,1951> Dr. Mid-Nite II greeted McNider, the original Mid-Nite, at his home. McNider was positive Mid-Nite II would never even consider lying from the sound of his voice, so he believed him when he told McNider he had to return to action as Mid-Nite to stop Per Degaton from altering history. McNider picked Mid-Nite II’s brain about all the innovations in medicine to come in the future then left with him to go after Degaton. They met up with the rest of the reformed Justice Society and the JSA at the Justice Society brownstone. Hourman informed them Per Degaton was going to assassinate the President. The Justice Society and JSA went to Washington to warn Truman that his life was in danger. Degaton and the Red Morgue attacked Washington, but the teams were ready for him. Degaton used a time-disc to speed up Atom’s metabolism and turn him into a nuclear bomb ready to go off. If he exploded millions would die, but J.J. Thunder and Johnny Thunder summoned the Thunderolt to turn Atom back to normal. Mid-Nite and the other heroes defeated Degaton, who fled into the timestream. The resulting time distortion caused the Justice Society members to forget their adventure with the JSA. After Degaton was defeated Rip Hunter ferried the JSA back to the present.
(Green Lantern: Rebirth #1-3) - Mid-Nite and Martian Manhunter tended to Guy Gardner after he lost control of his powers and destroyed Warriors. The only thing standing in Warriors was a statue of Green Lantern, leading the JLA to worry that Hal Jordan was involved and had returned to the dark side. Green Arrow went to check in on Guy, and the GL ring Hal once gave him duplicated itself, and the duplicate ring put itself on Guy’s finger. Guy was once again a Green Lantern, but he was in the possession of Parallax. Guy decimated his friends and flew off.
(JSA #73-75) - Atom-Smasher asked to be readmitted to the JSA so Mid-Nite and the JSA had a meeting and a vote on it. Once they’d voted, Atom-Smasher was already gone back to Khanaq. Captain Marvel told the JSA that Jean Loring/Eclipso and the Spectre-Force were attacking Khandaq, and their help was needed there. The heroes had little luck battling Eclipso and the Spectre, and Black Adam resented their presence and began fighting them. Spectre only stopped his attacks when Atom-Smasher told him he’d accept the Spectre’s judgment, and allowed the Spectre to stop his heart. Black Adam restarted his heart with his magic lightning, and the JSA took Atom back to America after warning Black Adam to stay far away from him in the future.

(JSA #78, 79) - Mid-Nite and the JLA located Fate’s Tower, and found Fate’s helm, but no sign of Fate. Sand put on the helm, awakening Nabu. Nabu told them Spectre did something to Fate, but he didn’t know what. He opened a portal to the 5th Dimension so the JSA could rescue J.J. Thunder. Only Hourman, Terrific and Stargirl made it through before Mordru attacked the rest of the JSA, breaking Nabu’s concentration and sealing the portal. Mordru defeated the JSAers and crushed Fate’s helm. Nabu repaired and animated the helm, and told Mordru it was time to settle their conflict. Nabu weakened Fate, and when Terriffic, Stargirl and Hourman returned with J.J., he used the Thunderbolt to banish Mordru.

He defeated China's superhero team the Great Ten before China allowed Mid-Nite and the American superhero community to square off against him. Black Adam was a god with nothing left to lose, and each punch he threw was intended to kill. His savagery was winning the day until Martian Manhunter reappeared and flooded his brain with his own loss, the death of the entire Martian species. Black Adam was distracted long enough for Captain Marvel to hurl a Shazam bolt at him. Theo Adam was powerless, and left with amnesia. He staggered away unnoticed from the end of WWIII.
(JSA #83-86) - <one year later> Dr. Mid-Nite gave aid to Gotham’s homeless when several ghosts of the people his clinic failed to save appeared to him. Mid-Nite and the JSA had their first get-together in many months, and many of the members recounted recent encounters with the ghosts of loved ones. Gentleman Ghost appeared to the JSA and told them the ghosts they saw were his warning to them that they would all soon die by his hand. The Ghost hospitalized the Green Lantern, and Mid-Nite treated him, but couldn’t improve his condition. The spirit of Jade healed Lantern, who insisted on going after the Ghost again. Mid-Nite’s doctors orders for him to rest were ignored, so Mid-Nite returned to his clinic to work.

Superboy bragged that once the sun rose on Earth he’d be at full power. Superboy was battered by Wonder Girl and Wonder Woman, who blamed him for Superboy’s death, as well as Supergirl and Power Girl, who blamed him for the death of the Superman of Earth-2. As the fight went against him, Superboy broke down in tears. He tried to wipe them away, saying that it was impossible for boys to cry, and then whining that no one ever thanked him for sacrificing his Earth to save the multiverse.
