History(Jonah Hex: Riders of the Worm and Such #3 (fb)) - The Worms of the Earth were a subterranean race that arose before the dawn of mankind, and ruled the plains of North America. When mankind arrived in North America the Worms came in contact with the Comanche and waged war on them. The Comanche learned that the Worms were vulnerable to light and fire, and managed to force them back underground. The tribe tried to eradicate them, but the Worms were protected by Mother Worm, and she was too much for them to handle, so they sealed the Worms’ burrows to the surface with boulders. The story of the Worms of the Earth became forgotten over the centuries, remembered only as legend. In the 1800s Errol Autumn bought up a parcel of land to farm, but finding it full of stones and rot he started dynamiting the property to clear it, inadvertently reopening the Worms’ burrows. Errol’s wife was attacked by the Worms, who forced themselves on her. She gave birth to three Worm / human hybrids, two of which survived. Upon seeing the children Errol committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. Newborn Edgar and Johnny Autumn grew to adulthood in a few years. Mr. Graves purchased the property the Worms resided under and built his Wilde West ranch.

(Jonah Hex: Riders of the Worm and Such #3-5) - Big Worm controlled the Autumns and wanted her land back. The Worms led a number of raids targeting lone ranch hands and unattended cattle. Mr. Graves employed gunslingers Jonah Hex and Billy the Kid to end his worm problem. The Autumn Brothers used binoculars to spy on Hex while he made love to ranch hand Brunhilda, and they got lonely realizing women didn’t like them. They reminisced about forcing themselves on pigs, and wondered if any of the farm animals actually cared about them. The Autumns returned to their cabin, where one of their hybrid cousins was using Edgar’s chamber pot, so he shot him. Johnny told Edgar he had to cool it with killing cousins until they found women to make more Worm hybrids. They went into Big Worm’s burrow and reported back, and she wanted to see them be more proactive about getting her land back. Jonah went to the mess hall where Big Worm had recently burrowed through to devour one of the ranch hands, and told Graves they’d been going about it all wrong by just defending themselves from Worm attacks; they had to take the offensive. He proposed that in the morning, when the Worms would be vulnerable to the light outside, they use the hole created by Big Worm to make a raid on the monsters. The Autumn Brothers and their numerous hybrid cousins were also preparing a raid on the Wilde West, and the next morning, while Graves, Hex the Kid, Brunhilda and several others went underground, they put tumbleweeds on fire, lit it ablaze, and crashed the cart into the ranch’s gates, forcing the ranch hands to open the gates and leaving them vulnerable. The Autumns easily took the fort, and got the ranchers to reveal where Hex and company had gone after setting several ranchers on fire. The Autumns and their cousins went underground, looking to ambush Hex and his companions. Hex and company found the underground city where the Worms’ dwelt, and it was filled with mechanical marvels such as motor cars, elevators and mechanical men, but the Worms had long ago forgotten how to create such marvels. Deep in the city the Autumns attacked, but lost in a gunfight with Hex. As the brothers lay dying they admitted that it wasn’t such a big deal because their lives were horrible anyway and no one liked them except each other. Hex and company were attacked my a mob of Worms and Big Worm. Cowboy Paco sacrificed himself, getting swallowed by Big Worm, but setting off dynamite inside her, and blowing her to pieces. The rest of the Worms lost their will to fight and slunk away into deeper tunnels. Hex dynamited the entranced to the Worms’ tunnels, ending the Worms’ threat.
