Sam was convinced they were dead, and when they came home he was shocked. He had accepted their deaths, and mourned them, and he did not want to go through that experience again. He then snuck into their bedroom and murdered them, supposedly because he loved them so much.
(Hellblazer #28 (fb) - BTS) - <fourteen years ago> Sam Morris became a notorious serial killer, dubbed the Family Man by the press. He was known for targeting entire families, and killed over seventy-five people. Sometimes he left one of the parents alive, but always finished off the children, seeing himself as saving them from unbearable love
.(Hellblazer #24) - Merchant Jerry O'Flynn contacted the Family Man, informing him that his client Reed Hackett desired souvenirs from the Family Man's exploits. The Family Man agreed to trade with O'Flynn in exchange for O'Flynn supplying him with names of potential victims. When O'Flynn became indisposed John Constantine was staying at his house, and he unwittingly gave the Family Man his latest list of victim's names. Constantine went through O'Flynn's journal and was horrified when he realized what he had done.
(Hellblazer #28-30) - The Family Man set about finding John Constantine, the only living person who knew he was a killer. After a nightmare about John Constantine bringing him to justice after he murdered his parents, the Family Man left the nursing home he was staying at, claiming he was going to live with his sister in Brighton. He was beloved in the nursing home, but reflected that the elderly he’d spent so much time with were human garbage. He used his old police contacts to gain all the information he could about Constantine, and enjoyed himself hearing that the police were traumatized but clueless as to the identity of the Family Man. The Family Man couldn’t pin down John, but had an idea about how to hurt him. He boarded a train, and was severely tempted to kill a mother and her two children that he chatted up, but restrained himself. He located John's father Thomas, and killed the old man after wheedling John‘s current address from him. He traveled back to London, and couldn’t contain his hunger, so he killed a family that ran an Indian restaurant, alerting John that he was nearby. The Family Man thrashed John's friend for information, but got none, although he suspected John was living with him. He left a bloody postcard for John, letting him know he’d offed his father. That night Chas made a scene about kicking John out, and when the Family Man followed him to Chas’ cousin Norma, Chas tailed him, recording the nearby hotel he took up residence in to keep a watch on John. The next morning John snuck out the back way, and when the Family Man got tired of watching the apartment John followed him. He aimed his gun, and had him in his sights, but couldn’t pull the trigger, telling himself he needed the murderer’s death to be more personal. Eventually the Family Man realized he was being followed, and lured John into a construction site, ecstatic that someone was giving him sport. The Family Man decided there were too many variables, and after slipping John’s watch, he left the scene. John took an express to Victoria for his father’s funeral, and hoped he’d be pursued, because he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder. The bus got a flat, and the Family Man jumped John, with their fight ending up in an underpass. John threatened to shoot, and the Family Man told him he was no murderer, besides, he reminded John too much of his father to kill him. John grazed him, and the Family Man wondered if he was about to become a kindred killer, asking if John experienced the primal rush he always did. He didn’t so the Family Man urged him to keep shooting, telling him he would never understand the mind of a killer if he wasn’t one. When Constantine had second thoughts, the madman grabbed Constantine's gun and committed suicide.

The Family Man was on the invitation list of the Cereal Convention that took place in the Sandman II #14. He was to be their guest of honor speaker, and the killers were distressed when he failed to appear, never knowing that the Family Man was dead.
