Class: Extradimensional mutate

Occupation: Supervillain, formerly botany professor, superhero

Group Affiliation: formerly Secret Society of Super-Villains, New Guardians

First Appearance: (as Jason Woodrue) Atom #1 (June-July, 1962), (as Floronic Man) Flash I #245 (November, 1976)

Powers: Floronic Man could communicate with plants, control them, and cause them to grow at remarkable speeds. He used genetically altered plants called plantoids, including a banana/cashew hybrid plant that spewed acid and regenerated, and a puffball plant whose puffballs disintegrated anything they touched. He could also regenerate from extensive amounts of damage.

History: (Atom #1 (fb)) - Jason Woodrue was an extradimensional fascist on a world filled with dryads and nereids. He was exiled to Earth for his crimes.

(Atom #1) - Woodrue developed plantoids, genetically altered deadly plants, with which he hoped to conquer Earth. He kidnapped Maya, queen of flower-spirits and forced her to aid him by using her dryads to help him. He tested out plantoids to rob a bank, and then used them and the sprits to make attacks across America. Woodrue and his plantoids marched on Washington, and Woodrue demanded surrender or he'd destroy the capital. Atom freed Maya, disabled the control box he used to control the plantoids and defeated him. A judge sent Woodrue to federal prison.

Woodrue created a serum that transformed his body into a plant form and renamed himself the Floronic Man.

(Identity Crisis #3 (fb)) - Floronic Man and the Secret Society switched bodies with the JLA. They took time to document the JLA’s secret identities. After being defeated the JLA erased their memories with Zatanna’s help.

(Saga of Swamp Thing #21) - Washington; Sunderland hired the Floronic Man to examine the seemingly dead body of Swamp Thing. Floronic Man discovered that Swamp Thing was not a transformed Alec Holland, as had been previously thought, but a form of plant-life that had the memories of Alec Holland. Sunderland and Floronic Man had a falling out, and Floronic Man ended up helping Swamp Thing escape Sunderland's clutches.

(Saga of Swamp Thing #22-24) - Floronic Man followed Swamp Thing to Louisiana and used samples of Swamp Thig's body and advanced technology to hook his mind into the Green. This experience stripped away anything human about Floronic Man, and he decided to avenge the countless plants that had been destroyed by humanity. He destroyed the town of Lacroix, then ordered the world's plant population to increase its' production of oxygen tenfold in hopes of eventually making Earth's atmosphere deadly to animals. Swamp Thing reminded Floronic Man that plants and animals needed each other to exist, and with that the Green severed its' connection to Floronic Man. The Justice League of America took him into custody.

(Saga of Swamp Thing #30) - Floronic Man was sent to Arkham Asylum. One night the inmates started acting crazier than usual; they all sensed the demonic forces that Anton Arcane was unleashing upon Earth.

(Crisis on Infinite Earths #9) -

(Swamp Thing II #52) - Swamp Thing visited Arkham Asylum to greet Floronic Man and forgive him for his past abuse of the Green.

(Doctor Fate I #2) -

(Swamp Thing II #66) - Floronic Man ranted to himself in his Arkham cell, wondering why he wasn’t free. After all, Swamp Thing had forgiven him, and the Green had rejected him, so despite his appearance he should be considered a good and respected human being, not an insane plant. Constantine broke into Arkham Asylum, and presented Floronic Man with one of Swamp Thing’s psychedelic tubers, and told him to reconnect to the plant world that had thrown him out. Constantine was hoping to learn more about the Sprout, the new Earth Elemental created by the Parliament of Trees. Floronic Man was desperate to reenter the Green and did indeed contact the Parliament, but just then Arkham’s security caught John, who urged Floronic Man to keep talking while he was away. Floronic Man was devastated that the parliament had not chosen him to be the new Earth Elemental, the bridge between humanity and the Green.

(Swamp Thing II #67) - Constantine went to 5000 Maniacs Video, a store specializing in video nasties, to screen the VHS tape he’d made at Arkham. John and the owner watched Floronic Man rave about Solomon Grundy coming in contact with the Sprout and again asking the Green why he wasn’t worthy.

Woodrue joined the New Guardians, taking on the identity of Floro and attempting to make up for the harm he had caused others during his life.

(Green Lantern III #32, 33) - Entropy set out to destroy the works of the Guardians of the Universe, so he attacked Kroef's Island and captured the New Guardians and the Chosen. Only Floro escaped, and he sent his mind through the Green to send a distress signal to Green Lantern Hal Jordan.

(Starman II #33-35) -

(Outsiders III #6) - The Slab, Floro and his fellow inmates were offered transport to freedom as long as they helped Brother Blood fend off attacks while he used the Slab's GPS system to activate his cultist sleeper agents. The alternative was death if the prisoners failed to protect him. Floro and the other prisoners couldn't stop the Outsiders from foiling Blood's plans, but in the chaos Psimon led Floro and the others on a jailbreak, and after reaching Blood's transports they escaped scot free.

(Enginehead #3) - Enginehead put Doctor Grass' human trafficking organization out of business, and hired Floronic Man to kill Enginehead, convincing him it was worth his time because Enginehead was a new wave of sentient machinery, the exact opposite of what Floronic Man stood for. Floronic Man attacked, and was somewhat impressed but also horrified that Enginehead allowed plenty of human casualties in their battle. Enginehead destroyed Floronic Man's body, and Floronic Man pleaded with him to find a good therapist before leaving to find a new corporal form.

(JLA #115-119) - Despero restored the memories of former Secret Society of Super-Villains members Wizard, Chronos, Felix Faust, Floronic Man, Matter Master and Star Sapphire, who’d been mind-wiped years ago by the JLA after learning the secret identities of the heroes. They sought vengeance on the JLA for tampering with their minds, first picking off Red Tornado in Happy Harbor and Ralph Dibny in Opal City. This got the JLA’s attention, and they defeated the JLA and then confronted Batman, presenting him with the unconscious bodies of the JLA. The JLA revived, and the villains chose to retreat. The JLA presumed that the former Society members who had their minds intact remembered their secret identities, and went to look in on their loved ones. The former Society members made an attack on the Daily Planet, trying to kill Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White. They planned to take out all the JLA’s loved ones. The JLA defeated them, and had to decide what to do with the villains. Hawkman was adamant about mindwiping them again, and called for a vote, but it was a draw. Zatanna told the team her past actions were an abuse of magic, and she refused to mindwipe anyone ever again. She told the JLA to take her off reserve status and and left for Themyscira. Zatanna talked with Wonder Woman, and had a change of heart. She considered the Society members her mess, and she once again mindwiped them, telling them they were getting off easy for what they tried to do to the JLA.

(Swamp Thing IV #27-29) - The Floronic Man's body reformed in the swamp, although his lifeforce was split between numerous ,miniature versions of himself, and he longed to bsee Swamp Thing again. Swamp Thing protected a camp of Cajun refugees, but the swamp also held the Toad King, who'd threatened the safety of the swamp, prisoner tangled in a tree. When Woodrue met Toad King the King said he was unjustly imprisoned for telling the truth and doing what was right. The Floronic Man told him he'd free him if that would please Swamp Thing, and Toad said it definitely would. Woodrue had doubts, but capitulated because of his bad experiences in prisons and asylums, which he said never made him better. Woodrue found Swamp Thing's last body, and was distressed that his friend would not speak to him, but Toad King said he must have grown another body elsewhere, and he was correct, Swamp Thing was combating a blaze in Houma set by the King's son Nerk. The miniature Woodrue's combines and became a gigantic Floronic Man, demanding Swamp Thing's immediate presence. Tee-Toni demanded Toad King and Woodrue leave the camp, and after the King slashed him with his claws he responded by stabbing him. Woodrue freaked out about violence which he said was sure to upset Swamp Thing, and instinctively shot wooden spikes up from the ground, killing Tee-Toni, and wounding Toad King, who wandered off. Swamp Thing left Abby's side to confront Woodrue, chastising him for bringing violence to the swamp. Woodrue pleaded that he stopped doing bad things and was full of good, but Swamp Thing said he saw no evidence. Swamp Thing's rejection shattered Woodrue's psyche, and he again split into miniature versions of himself with incomplete minds and fled into the swamp. Woodrue decided that if Swamp Thing rejected his goodness, he'd go back to being bad because it was his nature.

(Titans: Villains For Hire Special #1) - Inspired by Prometheus' destruction of Star City the Floronic Man tried to tear down Ivy Town and make it a haven for plants. He was defeated by the Atom Ryan Choi, who burned him by lighting up a gas line.
